Some of you know I have been working at a really nice, small museum here in FL, but only part time. It was 4 days a week all summer, and my boss and I really wanted me to be full time, but it had to come from the Exec. Director of the whole place. He made me an offer a week ago, and with a little salary negotiating we agreed, and he gave me a letter of his final offer on Oct. 1. It’s a living wage, plus full medical and dental benefits, with vacation time, holidays. It started Oct. 1, when the new annual budget started. My title didn’t change, but then, I am a Museum Assistant in a two-person museum staff run only by the Museum Director and myself. I’m in charge on the weekends that she has off. My schedule is now Saturday through Wednesday, with a Thurs/Fri “weekend off.” (Plus I work the occasional evening reception, but that’s typical museum work.)
The rest of the dozen or so staff (I just love a small crew that wears a lot of hats.) work on the theatre productions, events, facility rentals, educational classes and workshops, and setting up things like jazz nights on the outdoor pavillion, festivals on the grounds, a carousel, a giant xmas tree, free Friday night flicks shown outside. It’s a lot of cool Performing Arts stuff, and I work on exhibitions in the museum that change every 3 or 4 months. The guys help with hanging the shows, and generally maintain the buildings. It’s a rennovated former 2 school buildings built around the 1920s. One building is the museum (my workplace) the other houses the theatre, admin offices and classrooms. They work better and do more than any of the really large organizations I’ve known. Very nice people too. The Exec. Director, who’d never really given me any feedback, was very pleased with my work so far and said I was a good fit there. It was good to hear.![]()
My boss gave me a super soft TY bunny two weeks ago, saying “this is to hold you over until you get a real one.” She’s very thoughtful that way. We love the same types of art and have a good time working together on our upcoming shows. I supervise a team of volunteers that take admissions and keep the place running smoothly. Right now we’re curating a show about memorabelia of the 40s, 50s and 60s, but it has to be done by Nov. 25th. We are crazed! It’s shaping up though, and now that I’m starting full time I can really focus on it. So I’m kind of a combo Assistant Curator, Visitor Services Director, Volunteer Manager, with Educational duties thrown in too. There really aren’t titles for what we all do there.
I have needed a full time job since a year ago last May, and it’s been really hard waiting. But it is paying off and I will be back on my feet soon. My parents are THRILLED, and I am starting to see what apartments are out there now. I think I may be the only person to get a good job offer the same week the national economy tanked. WHEW!
So thank you all of you for your support during this stressful time. Driving home from a full day of work makes me miss coming home to Spockie more than ever, but my folks had steaks on the grille and I don’t need to move far away so it will work out well I think. Now let’s get those rental prices down, shall we? There’s bunny roommates out there just waiting to meet me!!!![]()
(P.S. My computer’s been down since Wednesday.)

Of course, my first week on a full time schedule I came down with a nasty head cold. I showed up for work Tuesday, said good morning to my boss, and she said “you’re sick. Go home.” I made it through yesterday and have today and tomorrow off. I offered to take some editing work home and she said “don’t do that. Don’t start working at home, you’ll never take any real time off.” Dontcha just love a boss like that?
The hunt for an affordable apartment has begun…
yaaaaay!!!!!!!!
oh yeah, hope ya feel better Pam!
