Hello, I hate that this has to be my first post here, but something tragic just happened. For starters, I have a 9 month old rabbit (Gus) with my girlfriend, and after doing a plethora of research and frequenting this forum, we decided to get him a companion, 6 week old Lilith. Lilith stays in her cage for now while we are not home, and when one of us is home we let her out for play and such. She is a very active fun loving playful bunny, and recently discovered jumping. She will jump over barriers, onto one of us, and in her cage as if to escape it.

Today I came home from work on break from a double and found her dead in her cage. I am heartbroken, I am too scared to even look at her let alone touch her. I don’t know if she broke her neck or back. I feel like it must be related to jumping in her cage because all other signs indicated she was healthy. I feel terrible because I had seen her jump in her cage before and never thought much of it. I have no idea what to do, I feel just terrible right now. I guess I’m just looking for some advice. I look forward to using this forum for more positive things in the future but I just feel horrible right now. We all grew so close to that little bunny so fast

6 weeks? Are you aware a bunny that young should still be with it’s mother?

I’m sorry for what’s happened, poor poor little baby bun. At that age, it could have been anything. They are barely properly weaned at that age if at all.

What a sad story, I’m so sorry She might have had an undiagnosed heart condition or something, in which case it was just her time and there’s nothing you could have done. I’m sure that won’t help the sadness you feel but please do not feel guilt.

Hopefully Gus will be able to comfort you. Feel free to tell us stories and post photos of her (I know there’s an age limit for baby bunny photos but is this an exception?) And tell us all about Gus Hopefully your stories about Gus will help you feel more positive at such a sad time.

It is a very sad story, and I agree with Sarah. Lilith could’ve had a hidden condition, like a weak heart.

Don’t blame yourself, this wasn’t your fault. If she hurt herself jumping in her cage -well, you couldn’t have kept her in a cage so small there was no jumping space, that would’ve been cruel.

It’s obvious you loved her very much, and that’s the most important thing of all.

There is a rule about not posting pics of very young buns, but it doesn’t apply in a case like this. Lilith was a member of your family.

Thank you all so much for understand and the kind words. I’m not sure if you all will even see this but it was extremely kind of you all to do so. Tonight, my girlfriend and I had a heartbreaking burial for Lilith but it was beautiful and a special way to say good bye. After many years we have settled in for the night with our little Gus and our two sweet dogs. I look forward very much to be a part of this forum and sharing experiences about Gus and reading about others. Again, just thank you all, she’s in a better place I believe

I’m sure it was a lovely memorial for her. And I’m certain that although cut short, she had a wonderful time with you and your girlfriend and she was obviously very loved

I look forward to hearing all about Gus and even your two dogs (you can post about your dog’s on the lounge section of the forum)
