I don’t think Lucy is a dwarf!!!

So when I got Lucy, she was tiny.  Very tiny.  I was looking for a friend for her, and I saw this ad with this bunny pictured:

 

 

Desription: “Rescued this girl from an animal auction, very good looking Netherland Dwarf , small with tiny ears! Agouti color (like a wild bunny).
Her name is Trixy (I only know this because it is tatooed or written inside her ear!).
She is most likely an older rabbit, probably getting too old to breed so was dumped at the auction.
I have had her for over 30 day and she seems to be in good health.
A little skittish but not bad to handle once you get hold of her. Probably not a good bunny for small children to handle.
Looking for a forever home.
Asking $15 fee to cover my costs.”
 

Lucy looks nothing like her  Is she wrong, or was I lied to? Lol! It doesn’t matter either way, but Lucy’s ears span back to almost the middle of her back.  Her nose is longer, almost “hare like” my mom says a lot.  I’ll have to post a recent picture, but she looks nothing like this little girl.  Which is right?  Is THAT bunny a dwarf?  I’m so confused!

My Monkey in this pic is a Netherland Dwarf, although her ears are a bit longer than breed standards. If your lucy isn’t similar, than chances are she isn’t a Nethie

That’s definately a Netherland dwarf. There are other types – dwarf versions of differend breeds I guess. Like my Rumball is called a dwarf lop here in Australia and he is like 6lbs! But the dwarf lop (or mini lop) is a smaller version of other lop breed which is can be like 10lbs +.

It’s really common for rabbits to be labelled “dwarf” for the cute factor, or so people think they’ll remain small. I think pet shops do this sometimes when the rabbits are far to young to even be there so they just call them dwarf instead of baby. Sometimes they’re just labelled this because nobody knows really what they are.

Is Lucy 5/6 months now? How much does she weigh. It is possible she is crossed with a dwarf breed.

ETA: If you do a petfinder search for rabbit your area and put “dwarf” in the breed description box, just see how many variations come up. It is confusing!

Well there are dwarfs and there are Netherland Dwarfs. The term dwarf by itself is just a catch all phrase in my opinion for a small rabbit. Netherlands have very distinct features like the tiny ears and the mushed up face and bug eyes (I know that description doesn’t sound very pretty but they are adorable rabbits) and they are generally no more than 3 pounds in size.

There are also lots of Netherland Dwarfs who do not properly fit the breed standard, but are still nethies. These are usually called “pet quality” because they don’t have the type to be show animals, but are still purebred. Depending on her weight and size, there’s a good chance she’s just a pet quality nethie and looks quite different from the nethie in the picture.

She could also be a mix. I honestly see nethie in your girls face. Yeah, her ears are a touch big, but she might stay tiny in body. Plus who doesn’t want a normal looking rabbit in tiny form?

Elrohwen said already exactly what I was going say. My first bunny I got from a breeder, and he was a Netherland Dwarf, but he was not “Show Quality”. Show quality Neths have flatter faces, shorter ears and a more compact body. Though Forrest was no more than 3 pounds and looked more like a grey version of Monkeybun’s rabbit.

Forrest’s nose looks short here, but it actually was a bit more pointed than what i’s showing in the photo.
