Quincy’s puddle problems seem to have been solved by an ultra high-backed box, so now I’ve got some learning to do.  I’m using the Feline Pine pellets and I feel like I have to empty the entire box every time I want to clean it.  I thought you could just scoop the mess out of the litter so you don’t waste as much, then do a big clean every week or so.  The four-week back of Feline Pine lasts a small fraction of that.

        Any tips?

        Thanks!

Well with that type of litter you pretty much need to dump it out. I add hay every day to the litter box and clean them once a week, mind you I have seven litter boxes for three rabbits, but that’s about as long as it can stretch. If your concerned about them being in dirty litter, start with a small amount then add some litter and hay each day, and at the end of a week clean it completely. That may stretch your litter out a bit.

I have to dump all of my boxes, all of my bunnies pee way too much to try to salvage any litter. That’s why I switched to the horse bedding, it’s a lot more cost effective.

I do a total dump every time too, but I’ve learned that I don’t need to put in nearly as much litter as I was and nowhere near as much litter as I put in for the cats!

i have been putting less litter in. Mike is adamant against me driving 45 minutes to go buy the horse litter, so i might have to sneak and do it someday while he’s working (Beka gets lost in farm country? lol)

i have recently moved the hay container so it is completely in one litterbox. they can only reach it from that litterbox. so far, i’ve noticed that they are only pooping in that box, so i am leaving that one for a week. the other box is the “high traffic” one, they do all their pee and most of their poop in there. that gets dumped out about every 2-3 days. also what i do… mine pee in a very strict pattern. only along the back of the litterbox. so i also twist it around halfway thru to get full use of the litter.

I use alot less litter then I do with the cats.  I put a very thin layer in there because I have to clean it more often and I really don’t find that I am able to just pick up areas and dump them.  I tried that once but by the time I got all the “bad” areas it was just about gone.  I only have to clean mine once a week but I have 3 litter boxes for one bun.  AND she does way too much pooping outside the cage.  If she did things IN the litter box more I’d have to change it more I am sure Which I would gladly prefer lol

Thanks for the help.  Using less litter makes a lot more sense if I can’t scoop it anyway.

I don’t really notice a smell if I little it sit too long, but I don’t image the rabbit likes the mess…

jjanew: i split your question into a separate thread. it is in the diet and care section.
