I bought my New Zealand from a breeder around Easter. I know, it’s terrible! I wanted one for a long time and couldn’t find them in the local shelters. Anyway, I’ve been looking for a large cage or hutch for him that I can alter. I noticed the breeder I bought him from had a yard sale today so I went to it. I went into her back yard and was immediately upset! The hutches and tiny cages she keeps her rabbits in made me very sad for them. When I talked to her on the phone (before buying my bun from her) She seemed to really care about the bunnies. Seeing them locked up in the tiny, dirty cages was a slap in the face for me! I wanted to say something but I just left. I keep thinking about it and keep getting more mad. Then, I looked up more info on her and she is not just breeding bunnies, she is breeding and selling just about every other type of animal too!
uhhh. it just makes you so mad doesn’t it
Very much so! I should have known though. When I got my bunny, she brought it out to me on her front porch. She is advertising herself like crazy around here. She is selling a lot of rabbits and a lot of them say “Proven Breeder!” I want to email her so badly and tell her off but it wouldn’t do any good at all! She is out for profit and that’s all that matters to her!
By the way, how old and how big is your dutch?
though’s poor buns. :'(
I’m glad I rescued my bunny from her though. I don’t know what kind of life he would’ve had…or wouldn’t have had![]()

Lol… most people with a 5th grade education can figure out the hows and whats of breeding rabbits. To say she’s a “proven breeder” is ridiculous. Unaltered bunnies don’t need HER help to make more bunnies! I said in another thread, all breeders/backyard nutcases are going to want you to think they’re terrific people who care about the bunnies. It’s their business. They’ll sell a bun to you or they’ll sell a bun to the next guy. They don’t care. I would much rather get a bun thru a rescue where they LEGITIMATELY care about the animals. All that matters at this point is you have your bun and you can use this knowledge to avoid people like this in the future.

she is about 6 pounds! heres a pic of her!
Wow, Lulu is such a beauty… I love the little white strip that goes up between her eyes.
Yes, backyard nutcases / hoarders… If I think about it too much I get sick. Same thing with other terrible things many rabbits have to undergo… But I guess the only thing one can do is work at the local level in whatever we they can (local shelter, bunny education, etc.)
I know that just from Lemony’s presence, many people around me have been really surprised about what great companions bunnies can make. I was really touched to hear a story about a bunny that had been hit by a car being rescued (the entire back portion of his body had been destroyed, the vet had to euthanize him
– it was an extremely sad story, and I was basically weeping when she told me about it, but I was touched to know that my “bunny education” may have had some role in her deciding to go back and find the bunny and do what she could for him.
Mocha your bun is so pretty! Looks just like my little Bella. How old is Lulu?
My little dutch man is a ton of fun
They certainly are mischievous little buns! My dutch is smaller than mocha’s, my boy Moose is just shy of 4lbs.
Your bunny is gorgeous!
As for the breeder, I would call the local Animal Control officer. Their job is to inspect people who have many animals and make sure they are living up to standard conditions, which she is not. A so called breeder can be regulated and fined, or even shut down with the animals rehomed or brought to shelters, if not doing right by the animals. She sounds like she needs a visit from the law. It’s to protect the animals, not her. You can place an anonymous call if you’re worried. It should be listed on the internet in your town or city’s government pages. (If her town is different from yours, call her town. If too small, call the nearest large city. She’s advertising – she needs to be inspected.)
If you’re going to contact the authorities, now would be the time to do it anonymously. She just had a yard sale with who knows how many people seeing the living conditions of these animals. So it could be one of dozens of people…
I agree with RabbitPam. However, I know in my area it is somewhat difficult to ‘prove’ cruelty. The SPCA seems to think that as long as animals are being provided with shelter, food, and water, that they are being cared for sufficiently. Good luck! This lady should obviously not have any animals anyways… let alone be breeding or selling them.
Awww
I know.. I got my bun from a breeder as well.

Brittany, just because you got your bunny from a breeder, doesn’t mean you have to hide your head in shame. I don’t want to demonize all breeders. I mean, yes, I personal prefer and love to encourage adopting a bunny from a rescue or shelter because there are so many that need homes, but that’s no reason for you to feel bad. Your bunny is loved and safe with you and really that is the best thing anyone can ask from someone who gets a bunny (or any animal for that matter) whether it be from a breeder or rescue. It’s just in this case, the member noticed something not right with the conditions from a particular breeder, and so that is what is focused on.
Yes! I didn’t even think about that! She wouldn’t know it was me at all! Thanks I will do that! Especially now that she is advertising as much as she is!
Good. And SullysMom makes a good point, but it is not necessary for you to prove any cruelty, that’s up to the authorities. They just need to be alerted that an investigation is needed. It would be disappointing if they don’t end up doing anything, but it could also help the animals, too. Once reported, they have a way of keeping an eye on suspicious people after that.
Ditto BB about breeders. I got Samantha at a pet store, a little independent one, even though I had every intention of going to the shelter an hour away. this little store was assisted by my own vet in getting all the right foods, having healthy set ups, etc. so I liked her shop. I went there for initial supplies to prepare for my new bunny that I was going to rescue, and Samantha was by herself just that day. Love at first sight. I never got to the shelter. So I know how you feel, but I’m so glad I have her. Not to worry.
I looked everywhere for shelters here that had rabbits! There are none at all! I was so disappointed. Especially since there are so many petstores that sell them and a ton of breeders around here. It makes me wonder where they go
It really gets me thinking. I have told my husband that when our kids get older and life isn’t chaotic I would love to rescue bunnies and adopt them out to good homes. Of course, my kids are all still very young so this would be for years. That just gives me those years to learn more about them and talk to people who do this. It would obviously require A LOT of research. It would great to be able to do that though.
