I went to give Tonks her medicine tonite and noticed her face looked swollen and when I went to touch it she started gushing blood everywhere. So I took her to the emergency vet thinking maybe somehow Tempe had bitten her. Even though I was sure she had not and the Vet said she has pasturella. He drained TONS of stuff out of her throat. He said she will need to have surgery but it will be ok to wait and take her to my regular vet in the morning. She has a she gaping hold in her face/throat now. I have never seen anything so horrible. I cannot stop crying. She seems to be completely fine. She’s eating and drinking a letting me hold and pet her. I hope that is a good sign. They said it will probably be a recurring thing but as long as she feels ok i’ll keep treating her. How will I know when its recurring again??? I dont want to wait for gushing blodd everytime. Anyone else delt with this?? I am freaking out.
was it an abscess that ruptured? I would have a rabbit vet diagnose Pasteurella- usually I think they do a culture to diagnose.
Oh no – yes, pasturella must be cultured to know if that is what has. Please take her to your regular vet for further treatment and keep us updated.
good grief, that is so scary, let us know what the vet says
(((((tonks))))))
Oh my. Please calm down and definitely consult with your regular vet. They’ll need to do further tests to figure out what exactly is happening. Have you contacted your vet yet this morning? What made them come up with pasteurella?
I went to the vet the second they opened this morning. He said it could be multiple things. Hay could of poked her wrong and caused abecess/infection. It could be pasturella. It could be a horible tooth abscess. When he looked at her teeth originally he said they looked ok but he will have to look further. She is having surgery on Monday to get to the abcess and they are doing xrays on her teeth. He gave her pain meds in the meantime I will continue her antibiotics. So I won’t really know anything until after her surgery monday. SHe is acting totally fine though. Hopping around eating like regular. You would never know anything is wrong until you get close up and see that aweful hole in her mouth. I can’t even look at it without breaking into tears. I will keep you guys posted. Thank you SO MUCH of the words of encouragement!!!! It seriously helps like you would not believe!!!!
I’m glad you went to your vet – he sounds like he really knows his stuff. I think it’s a shame when vets give you a diagnosis without testing.
I’m sorry you’re going through this. My smallest bunny had a horrible abscess that covered his whole jaw and it was awful to look at (and smell, gag)
He’s a lionhead and I didn’t see it for days, just smelled something dead in his condo area. I finally picked him up and when I touched it it started running out blood and pus all over my hand and it scared me to death.
If you get a chance to read about rabbits’ abscesses, you’ll learn they’re different from other animals. Once my vet cut away the hard outer cover and exposed the entire infection, it looked God-awful, you could see muscles, sinews, the hole with the pus oozing out, despite doctoring my many pets for years, I had never seen anything like that in my life and couldn’t believe it would heal.
Luckily his teeth weren’t affected and the abscess didn’t bother him at all pain wise. He did hate being held down every evening so I could clean off any scabbing and put more ointment in, but you could see the wound healing up more each day. As it was almost healed a few spots would pop back up and take some more scrubbing and home treatment, but it’s finally gone.
I hope it’s the same for you and his teeth are ok. I know it’s hard to believe they can have such a horrible looking wound and not be suffering terribly, but sometimes they can depending on what tissue is affected.
Keep us updated and hugs
Kathy
I’m just seeing this now, but I can’t imagine how freaked out I would be too.
So glad your regular vet is on top of it and is helping already.
Rabbits do not hop around if they are in discomfort, so take comfort from Tonks’ behavior. Clearly you did the right thing right away.

That is absolutely horrible. I would have been in shock screaming getting dressed ASAP getting bun in the carrier and rushing over to the vet. Whew. Thats probably exactly what you did.
Glad to hear bun is getting treatment. Seems like a case of looking much worse than we ever imagined it could. Glad you have a good buny vet.
Hang in there it may take a bit but it will clear up and bun will be back to looking normal.
These things are so stressful to go thru. Glad bunbun is behaving like normal.
kralspace- I must of caught it early cuz I have not smelled anything weird and I am the smell queen!!
bunnytowne- that is exactly what I did!! Blood was pooring everywhere and I was screaming like a crazy person to my husband to get the carrier and we were out the door!!
Rabbittpam- I am for sure glad that she is hopping around!! It makes me feel better. I’m at work right now on my break so I don’t know how she has been this afternoon cuz I did not get a lunch break today to go home but I am rushing home the second I get off work.
Sarita- I really like my regular vet!! It makes a big difference when they know what they are doing!!!! I am glad they were able to remove all that puss stuff out last night but that emergency vet obviously did not know much about bunnies because he was telling me she wold probably need surery in the morning and not to feed her anything the rest of the night and in the morning but luckily the vet assistant piped up and said no with rabbits it’s ok for them to eat and drink before and she told me to definatley keep feeding her or her blood sugar would get too low if they did do surgery in the morning!!! Thank God for her at least. Cuz the Vet was like oh I did not know that!!!!!!
OMG how awful! I would have been a total wreck too.
Sounds like you are in good hands now with your regular vet. Please keep us posted on Tonk’s progress.
How is our lovely Tonks doing today? Ohh I bet the time just crawled by for you today.
OH gawwwwsh! I would have been a mess too! Keep us updated with what happens after the surgery too.
She is doing great right now!! She is running around, binkies are flying left and right. She’s eating like normal and i’m getting bunny kisses! I cannot believe I have to take her in for surgery on Monday!! (Not that I want her to be acting sick ) It could be the pain medicine she is on!!
I pray she does good!!!
I’m glad she doesn’t seem to be in much discomfort. Not sure what i’d do if my Monkey had that happen
*snuggles for Tonks*
I’m so glad to hear Tonks is feeling better. Maybe the surgery is just to open the abscess and clean it out.
How did she do in surgery? She sounds on her way to recovery the way she is binkying around. Pain meds do help thats for sure.
Her surgery is not untill tomorrow. I have to drop her off at 7:30am. They gave me the pain meds I guess just in case she was in any from the emergenct vet draining all those abcesses. I am so nervous about tomorrow. I’ll just be glad when it gt here and over with!!!!
Good luck to Tonks! It sounds like she is feeling good and strong so that will definitely help her through her surgery. I’m so sorry you had such a scary experience, I’m just glad you stayed sane enough to get her to the vet! I think I would have passed out on the floor and me and my bun would both be at the emergency clinics ![]()
oh man. that is so intense. i’m glad to hear she’s doing well, and i’ll be checking back tomorrow to see how the surgery went!!
love to tonks ![]()
I had a cat years ago who was bitten on her rear end. She abscessed pretty badly and it was leaking pus and blood. It was drained and left a HUGE hole in her backside. I was just sick looking at it every day for the two weeks or so that I had to medicate it. (I was probably 11-12 years old at the time.) So I can imagine how it must hurt to see this.
Sending all the best healing vibes to you and Tonks! I’m sure everything will turn out okay! ![]()
Glad to hear that she is feeling better! But the surgery is probably to make SURE that everythign is all cleaned out in there because if anything is left behind you’ll both be baci in the same boat in a few weeks or so.
Well Tonks had her surgery. Her Teeth are good but he said he removed Sooooo much puss and abcess. He’s sure he got it all out but it was was all the way around her neck. I have to flush the wound 2 twice daily. She is still on her pain meds, antibiotics and eye drops and I have to take her in every day for 5 days for injectable antibiotics. Then off 5 days then 5 more days of injections. I am so glad it is over with but there is still a long road ahead. I am really worried its going to come back because of how much that was in there. I just hope I can tell when its happening again. He said it can happen pretty quickly. Thanks for all the vibes!! I will keep you guys posted!!!
Well Tonks is healing good. Still taking her in everyday for her injections. Plus the lovely tech is helping my flush her wound!! She is acting like she feels great. Eating normal. Running around doing binkies!! I even got bunny kisses last night!! I really hope she stays better.
Glad to hear that and continued vibes to you and Tonks.
glad she’s doing well. When Simba’s abscess would get a really thick pocket that was hard to flush out, I would squirt a little peroxide on it and the pus would liquify and rinse out better. It would sizzle like a Fizzie (for all us oldies)
So glad to hear Tonks is doing so well!
Continued healing vibes to you!
Aww. I’m so glad she’s coming along.
Mwah – kisses back to Tonks.
WOWOWOWOWW!!!!
Oh my gosh I can’t imagine how scary that must have been-especially initially having all that blood come out! Kudo’s to that vet tech telling you fasting was unnecessary!

Gee that was a big abcess. Around her neck too. Unfortunately it can be so hard to notice when small. I wonder how it happened. What caused it.
Glad Tonks is doing good after surgery. Awe a kissy. She must be feeling better. She definitely knows you care thats for sure.
I’m so happy to hear Tonks is healing!
