I’ve just heard from a friend that her sister who lives in Germany just got two new bunnies, cotton and candy, from someone that they know. I’ve seen their pictures and they are so cute, what shocks me is that the person that she got them from put on Facebook that if she didnt get rid of these two bunnies she was going to feed them to her pet snake thankfully my friends sister told her where to go and that she would take them from her. why would anyone want to feed two cute bunnies who aren’t even 6 weeks old to a snake, its too cruel, i think there should be a law saying not to feed snakes rabbits.

Actually, live food for snakes is illegal in most countries. Many snake owners don’t do it anyway, for fear of what the live animal could do to their snake whilst thrashing about wildly. I care, more for the fury creature they’re fed, not the snake.

I know it’s not illegal here. A lot of pet stores including a major retailer pet store sells live mice and rats for snake food. Snakes have to eat too but I agree I could never own a snake and feed it live creatures some people buy live and feed live because their snake won’t eat the flash frozen mice and rabbits.

i know snakes have to eat too but i would give it bugs because i dont like them, i couldn’t look at two helpless bunnies and think snake food, i couldn’t feed snakes in the first place. to me snakes arent pets they are animals that i would keep far from my house.

Snakes dont eat bugs. Some ppl are passionate about their snakes as we are our buns. But most feed their snakes feeder mice, not buns. Feeding snakes live food is not illegal in the united states. Its usually encouraged because its more natural for a snake. But it is sad, esp to those of us who love the furry creatures. Just the circle of life it sounds like the lady posting thst was just being hateful wanting somebody to get the rabbits asap. Thankfully they were adopted so quickly.

I could never own a snake because I love mice, but I don’t believe it’s morally wrong. I am sure many people here feed their dogs and cats meat and don’t think twice about it because they don’t place the same value on a cow/chicken/fish as a rabbit, mouse, etc. Just so long as the animals are raised in proper conditions (which many animals are not) I am fine with it, snakes/dogs/cats need to eat as well.

I owned a snake. He ate frozen mice. Well, frozen mice that were thawed. All I had to do was wiggle it and he would come take it. In order for a rabbit to qualify as snake food, it would need to be a pretty big snake. Large snakes like that are illegal in some places. I honestly don’t think it is wise to keep a large snake like that. They could easily cause injury or even kill.

MOST vets and snake groups I know of DISCOURAGE feeding live food to a snake. Snakes can have major harm done to them by feeding live, including fatal infections caused by rat/mouse claws/teeth. Yes, it is natural for a snake to eat live prey, but it is not natural for even if it doesn’t feel like eating that second the prey is stuck in an aquarium with it and will fight for its life. Also, in the wild, if a snake attacks prey that is too dangerous and hurts them to the point of death, well, too bad for the snake, that is nature.

To give you an example: my brother had a pet fancy rat (looked like this guy: http://albertarats.webs.com/3608.jpg) when I was a kid. We lived in Florida, on 5 acres of land, with a pond in the yard. Lots of snakes in the wild around our home. My mother put in a doggy door for our dogs, we had a fenced in yard for them and she got tired of getting up and down to let them out every time they wanted (up to 50 times in one day). A rat snake (http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/snakes/brat.htm) came in through the doggy door one day and got into our rats cage, this was early morning so no one was in the living room where the rat lived. My father hears the dogs and rat making a huge fuss so goes in to see what all the noise is about and … theres a snake bloodied face being beaten up by our rat. Harm to the rat? A lost claw, which was lodged in the snakes face near the eyes. The snake was taken out and set free, the rat was checked out and fine. He suffered no ill from his encounter, except a sore foot, which healed up in a few days. Yes, measures were taken to keep snakes well away from him after that, no one was thinking about wild animals coming in the house through 5 dogs to try to eat him.

Beyond the danger to the snake, it is considered not very nice to the animal that is prey either. Feeder mice/rats that are sold frozen are humanely killed and then sold as food. I personally could not own a snake, but then my pets are all vegetarian just like me. I have issues feeding dead things to anything, including myself.

But… unfortunately many animals, yes bunnies included, are considered food. People still eat rabbits for human food too. It isn’t any more wrong than eating any other animal (and how wrong that is, is up to each person to decide themselves). Yes, we all love our bunnies, but there are people who love their mice and rats just as much as we love our rabbits. There are even people who love their chickens, pigs and cows as much as we love our rabbits. That doesn’t mean anyone who eats meat is evil, or anyone who feeds those animals to their predator pets is evil.

I agree. I think it’s just a ploy to get someone to take them. Some people threaten to eat them themselves also. Just to pull on the heart strings of whoever is reading. It’s callous & idiotic.
