I hate to link out but I took this video of my bunny scratching the bed. He does it nonstop! We are new bunny parents and don’t know what this means? He also does it sometimes on us when we’re lying down. We are confused because if he was angry or scared wouldnt he not approach us? He still does and he loves to climb on us but he just keeps doing this when hes on the bed! It seems like everyone here knows their bunnies pretty well so I wanted to ask you guys about it! Any insight?

He is about 6 months old and is not yet neutered (we have an appointment set up for the beginning of January). We haven’t picked out a name quite yet! We love him so much we and just want the perfect name for him !

I’m not exactly sure what it means either, but, you aren’t alone. Sunny does the same thing

I’m not exactly sure why… but Leroy does that when he’s just playing. Or when he’s mad at me. He’ll dig at my leg/lap/arm like that when he wants something.

Alot of bunnies just like to dig. he probably likes the feel of cloth on his toes, and finds it amusing to dig at. You may want to make him a diggy box, one with strips of fabric being as he seems to enjoy it so much. Its nothing to be worried about

My Archie does this all the time in his cage on the colorplast. We kid and say he’s typing a story because it sounds like he’s typing something. Then he’ll stop and Gracie will go next to him like she’s giving him ideas and then he’ll continue to type I mean dig some more haha!

So cute! I love his colour too! Maybe it’s because the bed gives a bit he feels like he’s really outdoors digging. Digging can be a “play style”. For some people, I’ve heard this digging motion on sofa or bed was a precursor to peeing! Beds and sofas are big faves for rabbits peeing on them. I do agree though, he’s not scared, just keeping himself entertained by the looks. Have you ever given him a towel to play with? Some like to dig at them and arrange them. Also chew holes in them…

Welcome to BB by the way!

Welcome to BB! He actually looks like a very confident happy little guy. Small bunnies can be a little skittish in general, but here he just looks like he’s doing some busy-work. There are several reason why a bunny will dig, many of which have been mentioned – if he’s young he could just be playing working off his excess energy or like any aged bunny figuring out a way to dig a burrow, a scrape (a dent in the ground to lounge in), and it’s true sometimes bunnies dig right before they leave you a poo present. (which may be due to the fact that bunnies in the wild do have dug out latrines, but not sure if that is really what is going on when they dig then poo – could just be territorial.

There is a really great book that discusses alot of the baffling bunny behavior – http://www.amazon.com/Why-Does-My-Rabbit/dp/0285634402 Worth checking out!

Felony does this to my boyfriend’s shirt when he’s sitting on his chest. I say he’s trying to get closer to my boyfs heart (or trying to dig it out).

Welcome here! This is normal. Keep us posted on how his neuter goes and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!

Thanks so much guys! We were worried he didn’t like us!

He is quite outgoing for only being home for a few days. I will definitely try giving him a towel to scratch and try to amp up the little digging box in his cage now. All I did was put some extra bedding in a shoe box with lots of hay, meaning for it to be a beginner litter box. Instead he burrows in it all day and I think he forgets hes supposed to be there to do his business! He has yet to have an accident outside the cage. I think he was really well handled as a baby and knows its not the time to go.

It’s really amazing how intelligent he is! I only had guinea pigs before this little guy and I know I’m a permanent bunny person now

Oh hooty your bun likes to dig on shirts too?  So cool.    I have vids of Cotton digging on me but I can’t seem to post them here.

Totally normal-bunnies live underground and digging is very natural. It’s a play behavior. Kokanee, my first bun used to dig then slide out and ‘smooth’ it was just adorable

A diggy box is a fun toy to make for a bun who likes digging https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/4/aft/15720/afv/topic/afnp/148409/Default.aspx

Ours does the smoothing motion too! It’s so hilarious!
