So… what do you do with yours in the event of a severe storm?

Were in south east florida, right in the way of most hurricanes. Currently were in the cone of error for TS. Fay, its projected to be a cat. 1 by the time it hits the coast… as long as it isnt a cat2 or higher were planning on staying home and the rabbits will be able to stay in their cage. In the even of a more severe storm we will be taking them with us to my mil house, they will stay in a large dog crate while were there, my mil is a sgt for Miami PD so we will stay at her home with the dogs, so thats our plan.. whats yours?!

We dont get hurricanes here.. so im not really any help in that field but we have been seeing alot of flooding, personally i think the best thing to do is just make sure you are perpared, pack a bag with bunny essentials so that you can get out quickly if you need to, keep the pet carrier by the door etc. I hope you dont have to go through that! Do keep us posted

where we live hurricanes are very common.. every year we know the risk is there to be effected by a storm. We also thankfully have time before a storm, we see them coming. We do have a carrier, supplies, exc for the rabbits ready. I always have backup hay, bedding, pellets for them. We are currently under a tropical storm watch (36hr notice) once we get under a warning things tend to get more serious. i couldnt imagine living where there is no warning before flooding, tornadoes, earth quakes, ec.

yeah there was seriously flooding about 4 miles from my house, everyone lost all their belongings and actually 4 people died, its silly really because you just dont expect there to be flooding here in england in the middle of the city? anyway we didnt get any warning at all and it has been raining non stop for the past 6 days here.

yeah it can be, thankfully we arent close to any rivers so we arent really at risk, also the people who’s homes god flooded now cant get home insurance because no-one is willing to take the risk, so if it happens agani they will be seriously out of pocket, one person didnt have home insurance at all and has taken a £160 grand loss.

Anything higher than a cat 2 and we and the bunnies are OUT of here to Atlanta!!

We usually just stick them in travel carriers for the way there and have their regular cage packed up in the trunk to set up for when we get there -best to make them feel as at-home as possible.

Good ol hurricanes.  I think the media likes to scare us a lot saying to expect such n such an amount of cat 3 etc. this year. I feel we got ours out of the way for a couple of 10 years here in Florida.   You just never really know for sure tho.

Yes I like that we can be forwarned unlike floods tornadoes and earthquakes.

I have not evacuated during all those hurricanes we have had here in florida.  I didn’t have buns then either. I have to keep them well stocked with stuff when the warnings come up.  Keep their travel carriers handy just in case windows blow or something. Where I live is concrete and they withstood the storms very well here.

I guess I will gather their cages together in 1 room away from windows and weather it out. That way they are in 1 place I can get to them there and not in 3 different rooms you know.

I love thunderstorms and tropical storms. I can pass on the hurricanes tho.

Oh I will have to keep lots of water stored too when we get the warnings.

                                    Hi, ADEE,
Now you’re on my turf. I’m sitting here awaiting news of the direction of Faye. Over the last 5 years I have had a hurricane bag packed for myself – and one for Spockie.

We always left my apartment, no matter how “safe” it may have been, and moved into my parent’s house which is several miles more inland, West that is.
I carried him in my usual carrier and my parent’s stored my first cage for him that was smaller than his second one. Sort of a one-floor mini house for the duration. Even though I left litter and food at their house, I always packed a duffel bag with a litter bag (that midsized one of Care Fresh), a bag of hay, a tupperware sealed container of pellets, a water dish, a smallish litter pan, several smaller bottles of water, some paper towels, several trash bags for soiled litter or whatever, his meds, and one toy (my slipper). It sounds like a lot here, but a gym bag contained it all and wasn’t too heavy. This was in case we had to evacuate to a shelter instead of parent’s house. Once there, I just fed him normally, let him run around infrequently and not at all when it was during the storm. I stowed him in the small cage in the most protected corner of the house, usually the dining room interior wall without windows. Had wet washcloths ready if he got too hot, but he seemed fine usually. Cage was portable enough to get him to a closet, but it never happened either. He knew my parents well and was glad to be with us all, so he was very calm. If I’d gone to a shelter, he’d have stayed in the carrier.
Fresh lettuce was in the fridge until the power went out. Apples, bananas and carrots are good to have around because they can stay room temp.

I think that’s it. Hope it helps. Stay dry!! (We may both be offline very soon.)

                                      great post pam

we have been down here my whole life, in fact ive lived in the same 10 miles my whole life if you can believe that!!! Hurricanes are nothing new to us, hurricanes and rabbits however are. We already have two bags of hay (ya know the big ones by oxbow) a TON of litter (im talking like 100lbs of equine pine) and about 10lbs of pellets, especially during hurricane season i dont intend to let our stock get lower then that. We have a small dog (20lb) size carrier for transport, we have two bathrooms that have no windows to hunker down in if we got stuck in our condo.. if its a bad enough storm we go to my MIL house where she has a large breed dog sized crate (100lb dog) where the girls could hang out for a few days comfortably. She also has a generator so fresh foods wont be a problem either thankfully.

Stay safe Pam and those other members in the way of any hurricanes… Fay doesnt look like its going to bother us down here but its always great to be prepared.

I’m hoping all our Florida/Southern U.S. folks will be okay during Faye…and any other hurricanes to possibly come.
We’ve been having some nightmarish storms up here; lots of rain, wind, thunder and hail. I am just waiting for a funnel cloud to show up, as our humidity, temps and ratio of hot to cold air is beginning to become just right for such events here. I’ve only been in a few tornadoes when my grandfather and I traveled back east, but I don’t EVER want to experience that again!

                                        I couldn’t imagine having to brave a hurricane’s force! ~_~

Whenever we get a bad rainstorm or there’s an earthquake and I”m at home, I look over at Maryann who is usually spooked out. I tell her, “Be careful or you’re going to be Emergency Rations.” I know it sounds silly but I would swear she gets the joke because her eyes don’t bug out as much after I say it.

Well due to a bad job cutting something and a rather unstable band-aid, I have learned that Maryann likes the taste of blood.

That’s why she sleeps in the locked condo in the other room behind the closed door.

Well, it’s passed by now. It’s actually a crummy rainstorm today and for the rest of the week. blech. The season doesn’t end until late October officially, but the storms are pretty much possible from now through September. Got to stay home yesterday.

Adee, I found it hard to estimate how much in supplies to pare down into portable containers for transport. You sound very well stocked up at home, but the issue can be what to bring if you need to scram in a hurry. I just would separate extra supplies for him into the duffle bag ahead of time and throw it in a closet for 2 months just in case. Never had to go to a shelter and hope to never need to do so.

You know, guys, I still find it easier than 27 snow storms to shovel out each winter.
                                                    Back to work today. Later.

I went and got extra hay other day. They have plenty of food otherwise. Plenty of litter. I wasnt’ too worried about this one. Lots of rain and some wind. Cotton is a bit jumpy he is hiding in his box right now.

The neighbor is checking out my mic at his house. Made a computer. If it has a dvd burner I will take it if not forget it. HOpefully the mic will then work.

                                                      Awe here comes Cotton.

OH he nipped Ruby on the nose yesterday. Poor girl. Jealous Cotton.

I live in east central florida. I see couple of other people live in florida too. Cool.

Enjoying that rain? I love it. Gona pour all day. yesterday too  oh a phone call
