A great idea. I know they’re not going to prosecute people who have hutches (and I can understand that decision) but I do think that it should be made illegal for places to
–sell hutches too small for fully grown rabbits of set breeds
– sell rabbits and hutches within the same transaction and cool off period (not sure how long would be feasible but it keep them from running it through two separate ones) where the rabbit is too large for the hutch
– Fail to display breed type and minimum cage size by rabbit enclosures in a prominent and visible location. Where breed type is unknown or ambiguous, larger sizes must be assumed. I.e, dwarf + medium rabbit cross – medium rabbit cage advertised.
– Fail to display signage which educates buyers on behavioural issues associated with undersized cages, further more information on benefits to neutering/spaying must be displayed. This should aim to reduce bunnies surrender because they become aggressive.
– Display any signage or provide any advice that promotes, idolises or sympathises with maltreatment. Where financial difficulties are cited, cheaper alternatives such large indoor pens should be advised.
I say this because when we adopted Mr Roger from Pets at Home (they have cages of rabbits from a rescue in addition to baby buns), we looked around and couldn’t find ANY cages for a larger sized rabbit OR for two rabbits that weren’t babies. We kept asking the staff and they were really elusive.
Online they sell a larger range of cages with bigger size, but as these are more expensive and people are more likely to refrain from buying and expensive one its easier for them to sell a smaller one. Bonus points if the person actually orders a larger one from online – then they’ve sold two!
