        ugh.

so i woke up this morning, did some BInkyBunnying… drank coffee.  then i went to go do a quick clean in the bun room, you know… just a litterbox dump and suck up some stray poos and hay.  i did a big clean friday, moved everything every which way, so i was looking forward to just doing my daily, *quick* 10 minute straightening.

i grab the litterboxes and they are wet.  very, very wet underneath, on the sides… everywhere.  but i didn’t smell PEE, aside from the pee in the box which is barely even noticeable.  what the heck?  i touch the rug and it’s sopping wet.   i grab the water bottle… YUP… bone… dry….  the stupid thing drained all over my rug and the litterboxes, right thru to the carpet underneath.  Max’s cardboard diggy box was completely soaked thru (he’s going to be so mad but i had to throw it away!)   my “quick little straighten” has turned into a huge thing.  i cleaned everything up best i could, but i had to kind of roll up that side of the rug so the real carpet underneath can dry out.  the whole room is in disarray.  i had to reposition their pen so it’s sideways and not on that part of the floor, the buns are MAD b/c i decided they’re going to need to stay in their pen while the floor dries.  i tried to keep them out with the rug up but they kept digging at it, so sorry, buns, you’re just gonna need to deal with that for an afternoon.  i’m not in even the bunny room but i can feel the stink-eye penetrating the walls…

after all this i finally sit down and start thinking… i don’t even know how long they didn’t have water…  i refilled the bottle yesterday afternoon, then we went out to dinner.  in the evening i gave them pellets, but i don’t think i even glanced at the water bottle before i went to bed.  why would i, the dumb thing has never leaked before.  fortunately i have a second bottle so i threw the other cap out…

          Oh no! What a pain…

Yeah, I don’t trust bottles. My ratties bottles always leaked when I was a kid, so I didn’t even bother with them when I got Lizzy.

I do have the crocks that attach to the side of the pen, though. I’m really glad, because Robbie decided his new favorite game is, “This bowl is empty and the silly human should refill it”. He finishes eating, then shoves his nose under the bowl trying to flip it. And inevitable manages to crash it into the side of the pen, bang it on the hardwood floors, etc. Thank goodness for locking-crocks so he can’t do that with the water dish!

(And Lizzy picked up that evil trick from him, even though they’re in separate pens now!)

^^^i was thinking, i might pick up an inexpensive tall plastic trashcan and cut some skylights in it and substitute that as his new diggy box. it’ll be more resilient than the cardboard at least…

it’s frustrating b/c i never ever have issues with leaky bottles, i never have regardless of what kind of pet i had using them…

It’s those stupid washers in them Beka…I tell you those things are EEEEVVVIIIILLLL! >.<

I did something similar. Didn’t get the washer in place properly and go off to town and came home to soaking wet bunny pen. Needless to say, Her Majesty Pippicus Rex was not pleased. I wasn’t a bundle of joy either.

Even in the ones who washers are not removable, eventually those things dry out and crack and then they’re absolutely useless. I have yet to find a sippy bottle that I really want to write home about.

i think the washer was the issue, so i tossed the whole cap. i got a year and a half outta the bottle tho, so i was not totally upset about the bottle itself…

ugh… i hate the wet mess clean up!  so much nicer when you just have to sweep up some stray poops & hay.  your new diggy box idea sounds intriguing.  let me know how it works out!
