› Forum › THE LOUNGE › How’d you pick your bunnies name?
I’m getting a bunny in 1-3 months, and I want to start thinking of names! So, I was wondering if everyone would mind to share the name of their bunny*or bunnies* and why/how you came up with it! ^-^ Thanks
Well, my buns name is Muffin. He is brown with a white belly, sort of like a brown muffin with a white wrapper! I was going to name him Chestnut but then I said “Aren’t you the cutest little cuddle muffin!” and me and my mom immediately decided ” Muffin was the perfect name for him!
You have to see the bun to give him a name. Colour and personality!
My husband had Leopold’s name picked out before we got a bunny. Good thing Leopold is a boy. LOL
Dobby is a netherland dwarf and his size, coloring, big eyes and stocky ears reminded me of the house elves in Harry Potter. Pip, also a netherland dwarf, came with his name. He originally got it because he is so small. He’s kept it because I am a big bookish nerd who has read all of Charles Dickens and thought I could keep up the theme of literary characters as names for my pets.
I have a friend that’s getting a bunny and naming it Dobby. All of your guys names are awesome. ^-^ I already know that 80% chance the bunny I’m getting has a white face, the top of his head is gray, the upper part of his back+chest is white, then the rest is gray and his feet are white.
I generally pick generic names, puppy, kitty, beta, turtle, bird.. you get the idea. But when we got our shih tzu in 2009, he got named Bandit, because he liked stealing objects. Then when we got the other one in 2010, we decided to name him Outlaw to stick to a theme. I’ve always kinda been the bad girl of the family, and my sister is a cop.. she named her dog ‘Justice’. So when deciding bunny names, I wanted to continue the ‘bad guy’ names… we considered Jesse (James), I was wanting 2 rabbits (Bonnie and Clyde)… but decided that I was just too excited and better get one now and see how that goes. I thought Bumpy (Johnson) would be a good bunny name, since rabbits tend to bump you with their noses when they want attention… and no one would really understand the reason behind it but my husband and I anyway!
If I ever get anymore rabbits… well Jesse, Bonnie and Clyde are still up for grabs!
Well when I got Jack and Sally they were named after my favorite movie, Nightmare before Christmas. But sadly, Jack passed away (RIP) so it was just Sally. After about a month we then adopted a Harlequin breed rabbit. So we just named him Harley. So now we have Sally and Harley and they have no real connection for a coupled pair of rabbits lol
I love the movie Nightmare Before Christmas too! Now I’m thinking about naming my future bunny Frodo, or Smegle. LOL. And I’m really sorry for you and Jack.
Why not Pippin? That sounds more pet like (I know a dog named Pippin XD) And If you name him Smegel you are just asking him to become possesive of his precious willow ring.
HAHA! I actually decided on Bombur. From The Hobbit
Since we were getting a giant rabbit we decided to name him after a fictional warrior. My wife knows I’m a fan of Conan and so we named him Conan the Bunbarian. When we got a doe we continued the trend and my wife said she was Xena bunnier Princess. We’re probably going to stick to that method. Interestingly enough they both kind of live up to their namesakes in personality.
Porky came with his name from the shelter. He was named after porcupines, b/c he is colored like one, so Porky is just short for Porcupine. When we took him home we told our then 5yo son he could name him anything he wanted, but our son kept changing his mind so often we couldn’t keep track. So, we just kept calling him Porky.
My rabbit is a New Zealand White with piercing, lovely red eyes. He is named Valentino, because I just fell inlove with his eyes like a ‘valentine’.
I’m going to move this post to “The Lounge” forum as that is the more appropriate spot.
My bun “Bindi Loo” I didn’t know if he was a boy or girl. I just couldn’t tell because of all the fur so I wanted to pick a name that was unisex. I know Bindi is more of a girl’s name but I really liked it and went with it anyways. I got the name from the Crocodile Hunter’s daughter. I loved it. Then “Loo” got stuck on there somehow. It’s pretty girly but he doesn’t seem to mind.
My girl I wanted to name something pretty. I came up with a bunch of names and narrowed it down to about 5 and let my little niece, who was 4 at the time, pick her name. She picked “Olivia”. Which is fitting because every girl I’ve ever known named Olivia was very pretty. It fits her well, she’s so lady-like and elegant. My niece loves to brag about how she named Olivia. After she named her, I framed a picture of Olivia with the name printed on it and she has it hung in her bedroom.

seriously made me laugh
I have always named all of my pets “people names”. I am not a fan of descriptive names for pets.
Meadow was named after Meadow Soprano from “The Sopranos”. The show had just concluded shortly before we got her.
Both my current rabbits came named already – Bobby and Bogie so that’s what I call them. I wouldn’t change Bogies name but I probably would have changed Bobby’s to Mr. Mouse because he’s tiny and gray…but Bobby suits him to so I didn’t change it.
In the past though my other rabbits, their names just came to me after having them. I’ve had names all over the board like Giselle, Maxine, GIdeon, Jingles, Peaches, Peppermint, Toffee, Twizzler Boo…just to name a few.
Dexter and Penny had their names already. Penny was surrendered with another rabbit named Peso to the rescue we adopted from. Dexter was named by the rescue after the Showtime TV show character Dexter.
Monty is a rabbit someone released at my old place of employment and for some reason he kind of captured everyone’s imagination. We ended up catching him with the help of the maintenance crew and they kept calling him “The Monty Python Rabbit”. So I named him Monty.
When we got Helo and Inara we decided to pick names from either BSG or Firefly (sci fi tv shows) but couldn’t agree so we picked one name from both! Helo from BSG and Inara from Firefly… But I sort of regret naming Inara because EVERYONE seems to pronounce it “NORA” instead of “IN-ARE-AH”. >.<
Muffinluv: I actually did have a bunny named Pippin lol. He was a small brown lop who loved food.
LittlePuffyTail: I love the Crocodile Hunter! And I always found it funny that he named his daughter after his favorite crocodile (Bindi) and his dog (Sue).
Troller: Your word play makes me very happy lol.
Merlin (the bun in my avatar who has passed away) was grey and had long whiskers so he just seemed to need a wizard’s name! I originally thought Ingold (from Barbara Hambley’s Darwath Trilogy), but we also considered Gandalf.
Bromley was supposed to be named Mufasa. He is a lionhead rex cross, and if you know your Latin you would see that that makes him a Lion King! But I got him as a baby and he was so tiny and cute that Mufasa didn’t fit and my grandmother had a dog named Simba when I was growing up so that wasn’t an option. I also thought about Radagast so that his name would match Merlin. I love literary names as well. I don’t know what exactly it was about him, but he reminded me of Bromley from the Swan Princess so that’s what we went with.
When I got Odette a couple of weeks ago she came with the name Professor, but that didn’t seem to fit her. So we named her Odette to match Bromley. We call her Odie for short too because she has huge ears like the dog in Garfield.
As far as my other pets, I am all over the place and it would take too long to list them all so I will just say a few. I never liked the name Chance, but it fit my dog so well that it stuck. He was found abandoned on the side of a highway miles away from civilization at night and then posted on CL. My dad said it was by chance that the woman saw him and saved him, chance that he logged on to CL as soon as he was posted (I had just logged off), and we took the chance of my mom’s wrath bringing him home! (She wanted to wait longer before getting another dog because in the 6 months before we had to say goodbye to my 13 year old Shepherd, 10 year old cat, and 17 year old mutt.) Gypsy’s full name is Gypsy’s Fortune, which is a tribute to my grandmother. She used to read me this book called The Cat Who Went to Heaven, which was about a calico named Fortune. And my grandmother had a bit of Roma in her ancestry and always wished she knew more about the culture. Everyone that knew her used to say that she “was a Gypsy born in the wrong time.” Twitchy’s full name is Princess Twitchy. When she started hanging out in my yard and eating my cat’s food she would run whenever you stepped outside. But one day she didn’t run, just sort of shivered in place. I said “well hello there! Are you my new twitchy kitty friend?” and she walked straight up and rubbed my legs. I later learned that she is a total princess. My newest finch is named Krillin after the Dragonball character. He was plucked and mostly bald and I wasn’t sure if he was going to live any length of time.
When I went to pick up Zeus, I agreed to take him sight unseen… his previous owner told me on the phone he was a “dwarf holland lop”… showed up to a 10lb giant rabbit in a tiny cage. His size made me want to name him something grandiose and powerful, so Zeus it was.
Hera was named by my boyfriend. He knows a lot about mythology, and Hera is Zeus’s wife in mythology. It fits her well too, since she’s so hairy. LOL!
Powder came from the shelter with his name. Stickers had no name when we adopted her (four months old, had been living with someone and no name!). My boyfriend picked the name because she had sticker glue stuck to her neck which we had to get the vet to shave off her since it wouldn’t come clean.
You would think with owning 4 rabbits I would have named at least one of them, right? No…Not the case… I adopted all my rabbits from an AWESOME rescue here in southern California. They each came prenamed. Rascal was my first that I adopted. His name suits him, although he can be a little skittish. He’s a funny dude. Valentine is the second bunny I adopted. They named her that because she came to the rescue right around Valentine’s Day and she does have pink eyes. Marley is my third bunny and I am not sure why they named him that but I think they were going on a musician theme at the time because there was another bunny at the rescue whose name was “Bowie.” (I loved Bowie he was soooo cute and soft but not right for my home). Then there is Freddy…My sweet sweet Freddy boy…Freddy came in with another bunny (I don’t really remember if they were bonded but if they were then they were likely fighting after the spay/neuter and had to be separated) and the pair together was Fred and Barney. When Freddy separated from his other bun they just called him Freddy. I was going to change Freddy’s name and I tried SOOOOO hard to think of a name but Freddy is his name and it fits him so well!
Anyway, those are my bunnies. =)
I don’t have one yet but there is one little dwarf bunny that has been at the pet store for like A MONTH who i’ve had my eye on. i really hope he is still there next week when my boyfriend goes to buy him for me (anniversary present!). he’s white and black with spots so naturally I named him spot hahaha and hes not even mine (yet!)
