My bunny loves going outdoors! Anytime he has the chance to get out he will run for it but we usually stop him before he gets lost. When I try to walk him he keeps on getting hurt. I have two leashes, one is skinnier and one is the harness. Each time I walk him he’ll end up getting hurt. how should I walk him?

If he keeps on getting hurt I highly recommend that you do not do this activity. He may be running to find a place to hide because he does not feel secure.

it’s really not necessary or recommended to walk your rabbit. if you want to give him some outside time, a fully enclosed run is the only option. altho i think most people just give exercise inside. you’ll want to give him at least 4 hours of runtime outside of his cage… per day.

Not sure what you mean by walk. If you mean like a dog and actually go anywhere, that won’t happen. Basically having a bunny on a leash and harness means “bunny hops, you follow and go wherever bunny wants”.

Yeah, bunns don’t really “walk” on a leash like a dog does. A bunny leash is more for when you have them outside but don’t want them to run away.

For outside, set up an exercise pen and let them hop around but don’t ever leave them unattended. If you like the idea of going for a walk with your bunny, you could always get a pet stroller and take him for a walk. Just make sure the stroller zips up so bunny can’t jump out.

i know some folks do like to walk their bunnies – but most bunnies do find it to be very stressful. Honestly though – if he is getting hurt each time, it is simply not worth the potential risk. Is he hurt trying to get away? he might be getting spooked.

I wanted to try it on my buns but never did it. I was afraid that the leash alone it would be stress for them. So I just put up some fences in my back yard. But you have to make sure that the fences are down deep enough so that they cant dig under. The top must be closed for any predators in the sky.

We have occasionally been walked by our buns. We carry them over to a nearby park and let them run around and we follow. They’re pretty good at putting up with getting their harnesses put on. But you really do need to realize that it’s nowhere like walking a dog. Basically the bunny walks you

yeah i’m also wondering how your bun gets hurt.  does bun dart away, reach the end of the leash & then bounce back?  i’m thinking if your bun is very active that it may not be a good idea to put a harness & leash on & go outside at all.  being prey animals, some buns will try to bolt & run for cover when they feel unsafe / insecure & when the leash restrains them it escalates the situation because they feel ‘caught’.  my first bun was like that & i didn’t take him out again.  it was to stressful for both of us!  but pinky & baby both seem to enjoy casually sniffing around the porch on a nice day and neither try to ‘run for cover’.  i don’t technically ’walk’ them either… like others have said, i just follow them around & use the leash to hold them if i need to pick them up (i do this when i see a dog being walked coming our way or when they get close to the railing).
