        Hello all,

We’ve been to the vet with Pheebs today and Dr said she has skin mites (very little blackish dots), she has been treated but we were wondering about cleaning the environment.

All bedding/toys were disposed of, the batch of hay we’ve been using as well in case it’s how she got it. The problem is the carpets/sofa that she loves. We’ve read about miticide dust like DE, would this be the correct thing to use? How does it work? Do we just sprinkle them all over the carpets?

        Thank you 🙂

Unfortunately I do not have personal experience on cleaning the environment due to mites. I’ve linked two sites which may provide some guidance on mite treatment as well as cleaning procedures: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Mites , https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Cleaning_after_your_rabbit

You want to make sure that whatever product you use, you give it ample time to disinfect and ample time to disinfect to prevent any harm to your rabbit. This may require restriction for a time being, but that is definitely preferable to a reinfection!

If you treat your bunny with Revolution, there is some environmental benefit. Skin dander can help carry the Revolution into the environment. But it only really works where it would become concentrated (e.g. a pet bed, etc.). The best way to clean the environment is to wash any soft things in hot water (fleece, blankets, beds, etc.) and then thoroughly clean any hard surfaces. If you have carpet, then diatomaceous earth is safe to use. It has to be sprinkled on the carpet and then allowed to sit long enough to kill the mites. Then you would thoroughly vacuum the area. Keep bunny out during this time. It isn’t toxic, but the fine powder can cause lung irritation if inhaled.
