Luna, my 10 month Lionhead, only eats hay out of her bathroom box. I put down care fresh and then layers of hay for her potty, but she ignores the fresh hay in her hay baskets and hay bins and hanging hay baskets and only eats what she’s peed and pooped on. I’m worried that she’s eating gross hay, but also that she’s not getting enough of it. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

What’s her diet like and how much time is their between non-hay feedings? A good rule of thumb is to space non-hay feedings out every 12 hours, so that they’re practically forced to eat hay during that time. So for example, 8am pellets and 8pm greens. You could also try different types of hay to see which she likes best and gravitates towards. A lot of buns like orchard and oat hays.

          She’s so cute

What a cute little bun, love the matching outfits!

Try mixing with a different type of hay, like the Orchard grass. It’s slightly “sweeter”. My vet mentioned that he had a patient who had rescued two rabbits and they were never fed hay. To get them to start eating they used Orchard grass and then slowly transitioned them to Timothy hay.

            Hopefully this helps!
