So I usually put a wee wee pad in the middle of Spots xx-L dog crate (where he stays at night) as there are some cracks in the flooring pan (plastic), I removed the pad last night when I was cleaning his cage and did not have one to replace it. This morning it looks like he peed overnight where the pad would have been (of course, even though he ALWAYS uses his box to pee) and it got his grass mat. Not sure how to clean the grass mat as I don’t want any smell remaining that may make him pee out of the box again.

I would just kind of soak with a vinegar/water solution. As it dries, it should get rid of some of the scent, but it might be impossible to clean fully.

I’ll probably just toss is and order another one. It is not worth him peeing on it again if it has any scent!

Yeah, it’s best just to buy a new one.

So I bought a second one and put it in an area of his pen where he has never peed. That day he had an accident right next to the mat and it again got pee on it. It must be something with those mats and him. 2 times now he has peed near the mats. I never see him chewing on them so I am not sure why he is peeing next to them but I am not going to bother with them anymore!

It could be that they are absorbent, so he thinks they seem like a good place to pee.

If you still want to give them to him, you could hang them on the side of the cage so he can’t pee on them.

I think to him they look like hay so he figures, look another litterbox! I have only seen him nibble on th one time so I am just going to not bother with them. It’s not worth the hassle of the pee out of the box if he doesn’t even care to eat them.

If anyone else has this problem I would suggest hanging the mat near the litter box so if your bun is confused as well they will at least be in the box when they try to pee by it.
