I caught my bunny Hazel eating out of the cat litterbox! I use world’s best cat litter for my 2 cats and they have a covered litterbox with a little flap door but Hazel managed to get in. The litter is corn based so maybe that is why she is eating it. I am worried because it is clumping litter and it will clump in her stomach. She isn’t showing any symptoms of being sick but I will take her to the vet in the morning. Is there a way to block her from getting to the litterbox but still allow the cats to get to it?

Maybe you could sort of train her that that is not where she should go?  Also, is there anywhere at all where she can’t go in your house that your cats can?

My initial thought is height. It’d be very unusual if a rabbit felt comfortable jumping up into a flapped door entrance in my opinion. Can you put the litter box on a box or something?

I’ve no idea if this is a ‘thing’ but you know how they have cat flaps that only open when the cat is wearing a special collar (so that other neighbourhood cats can’t get in) I wonder if the same sort of thing for a litter box is a feasible option?

Perhaps put a fence around the litter box, or have it on a raised surface as suggested. If the fence has a table or something right next to it the cats can easily jump in and out but would be harder for bun bun. I suppose the other alternative is to change the cat litter to something that is bunny safe such as wood pellets.

The vet said there is no blockage so she probably did not eat a lot of litter. She is getting critical care, hay, and water to flush out any more litter. I was able to fit a table in the tiny bathroom and put the litter box on top of it. Not ideal but it seems to work.

That’s great to hear. Hopefully Hazel doesn’t figure out how to get in there now you’ve modified it.
