After all this mite discussion I am starting to wonder how much itching is normal?  Edson has been itching a lot today.  I have searched his body and and cannot see a thing.  I know it’s not fleas.  No flea dirt or anything.  His ears are clean although he does scratch at them sometimes.  But today he seems to be furiously biting at his feet and butt.  Maybe this is just normal itching but what IS normal????????

I’m not 100% certain what is normal. I think if your rabbit is starting to itch more than he/she has done then it might be something to be concerned about. I know that with me my skin does get dry and itchy when it’s cold out due to running the heater more often so I suppose dry itching skin is normal for my rabbits too if they are itching more than normal. Now, I do believe that things like mites aren’t just going to happen out of the blue. It is very possible however that if you have gotten your rabbit out of a shelter or pet store or somewhere other than your own environment that it is more probable for them to have contracted things like mites and coccidia, etc…which is why it is always a good idea to have your rabbit seen by a vet once they have adopted them and I now Edson has been seen by the vet due to his urinary problems.

I think you’re right it may be the cold weather and the fact I have been cranking up the heat too.  I have had Edson for 2 months and he was checked over by the vet. I’ll keep my eye on him. Thanks Sarita.

Since the vet has already checked him out, I’d also recommend keeping an eye on him. If it seems to get worse or you spot any symptoms like fleas, brown gunk in the ears or flaky dandruff then call the vet.

I had the same problem with Frankie a couple months ago… he’s was itching nonstop but I didn’t see any skin irritation or anything that would hint to fleas or mites… I decided to take him to the vet anyway and it was nothing. So if you’re not seeing telltale signs of a problem, I would not stress. He probably just has dry skin!

That makes me feel better because I really don’t see a thing!  I’m sure it’s the dry weather and heater running.
