Hi! Spinner is doing great with the new pen! Thanks for all the suggestions! My question is how much food does a rabbit need a day? Spinner’s owner said to feed her once a day by filling up her food dish once. The food dish is only 4 oz. and Spinner always acted hungry afterwards so I started giving her 2oz.-4oz. more a day. She gets lots of hay everyday too. Thanks!

How much food your rabbit will require depends on her size. My mini lop who is 3.4 lbs gets a half a cup of pellets a day, about 1 cup of veggies and unlimited hay (but he doesn’t eat much of it). Did you consider adding some veggies to her diet? My bunny loves Romaine lettuce, brocolli and carrots (in smaller quantities). Here’s a list of veggies that are safe for rabbits : http://www.rabbit.org/care/veggies.html

          Good luck!

Yes, is it possible for you to give her greens?

An ideal rabbit’s diet should exist of mainly (unlimited) grass hay and vegetables supplemented with the pellets. I realize however that you may not be able to do this.

Yes. I have given her a few “salads”, but not many. I will try that!

                  Hi Janymae,

It appears that your bunny is getting a lot of calories from the apple and carrots you are giving him, so he is going to be less interested in his pellets and hay and more interested in the high calorie foods. Carrots and apples are treat foods for bunnies; despite the common image of a rabbit eating a carrot, carrots are very high in calories and a rabbits’ digestive system is geared to digesting large amounts of low calorie foods like hay and leaves. Too many calories can make a bun chubby, and can also cause tummy troubles. My suggestion would be to cut out the apple in the morning, and give one small piece of apple or carrot in the evening. By small, I mean less than an inch long. Make sure he has good quality hay available at all times, and give him a cup or two of bunny safe veggies at night. If you look at the top of the forum page and put your mouse over “Bunny Info” and select “Diet”, you’ll get some good recommendations about good foods for your bunny. You can also get good information from the House Rabbit Society’s website at http://www.rabbit.org.

Hi Jan and welcome to BinkyBunny! Have you checked out the BUNNY INFO section here?  You just might want to take a gander at that as well, but all means ask as many questions as you need! Oh yes and Jan, about the cardboard, it is not good if a bunny eats too much of it, they will neglect eating enough hay because they are munching on cardboard, if so, it is best to remove the cardboard.

Bigsis, yes it would be wonderful if you fed Spinner a regular DIET of greens from the recommended list.  It does sound like a bit too many pellets for Spinner.  Are you getting used to calling him a he now?

Here is that list I was talking about:

Awe what a bittersweet thing. I really hope his owner is open and committed to taking great care of him as a house rabbit.
