› FORUM › DIET & CARE › How much do you spend a week on veggies?
I am just curious to see how much rabbit parents spend on a weekly basis for their bunnies ![]()
And also, what types of veggies do you feed to the buns?
I spend about 5 dollars or less.. sometimes 5.
My bunny enjoys romaine, red leaf, cilantro (her most favorite), and sometimes I’ll get another type like Parsley. She likes Italian Parsley better than the normal parsley ![]()
$15 minimum, so I voted for $15. I have spent up to $20 when things haven’t been on sale or if I get a more expensive veggie to change things up.
It’s also important to consider this in terms of how many rabbits a person has… I have two, of course… ![]()
About $6 for one bun. I’d like to try and minimize my “greens” budget though, if at all possible. Any suggestions? ![]()
I guess I have cheap veggies! I will buy a green and a red leaf lettuce and a dandelion green (or something similar) if they have them, that will last me about a week, about $6. Add another $3 for carrots that will last a week and a half. Then again only two out of my four will really actually eat the veggies. Delilah will only get one leaf of each and a few dandelion leaves, she won’t eat much of them but nibbles. She picks the carrots out and usually leaves most of the rest. Dexter and Dennis CHOW on their veggies. Dandelion greens are like green gold to them!![]()
Oh dear! I guess I spend the most. About $100 a week – maybe I’m spoiling my rabbits too much.
I do shop at a place that I can buy in bulk for my rabbits. Usually the Romaine Hearts which is about 16 bags with 3 hearts each is about $18.00 and that lasts me for 2 weeks. Where I really spend the money though is herbs – I have had a hard time figuring out how much to buy since I’ve gone from 9 rabbits to 5 rabbits this year (due to so many going to the Rainbow Bridge). I’m working very hard on figuring this out because it is costing me way too much money. And my rabbits except for Toffee are wasteful (well, they aren’t really wasteful, I am wasteful because I’m terrible at measuring out their veggies in the morning).
I really am going to concentrate though on figuring out the herbs since those are the most expensive. A pound of basil at the restaurant depot place is $5.95 and frankly, that is cheap compared to a store and it’s very nice – I could buy less of this though. A pound of dill is $7.95 as is a pound of mint. I really have to cut down on the herbs but they do enjoy them alot. Figures they like the expensive stuff.
30 bunches of cilantro vary anywhere from $7.99 to $9.99 per box (the price changes I guess due to the crops). This can usually last me a little over a week. I figure one bunch per rabbit/pair per day.
If I buy a box of the curly parsley (60 bunches) those are usually about $17.00 dollars a box.
Carrots which I buy a 10 pound bag at Costco for I think $6.00 lasts quite a while though.
I had never thought of shopping at restaurant depots for veggies before. Do you need a membership Sarita?
About $15 a week for two rabbits in the summer, but more in the winter when a head of romaine is 1/3 smaller and costs $1 more.
Beka, you do. I got my initial one from a friend who has a restaurant, but the non-profit I used to help got one being non-profit and that’s the card I use. There is no fee for the card and you pay as you purchase. I do see a Restaurant Depot in Cleveland. You need a business license or tax exemption form to qualify. It’s a wholesaler. I think they give you up to 6 cards per member.
I’ve been to the Cleveland Restaurant Depot. We buy our kitchen stuff there (pots, pans, baking sheets, etc…) One of my husband’s friends has a membership, so he “sneaks us in”… lol. I never really looked at their produce before tho. I’m not sure it’d be cost-effective in my situation, but I can see how that would help you out a great deal.
You should consider looking – you don’t have to get everything in a bulk. take a look at their herbs – great value in my opinion. I think too you can get smaller sizes of the parsley and cilantro. Worth looking into. I imagine that alot of people sneak their friends in LOL. They all know me as the rabbit lady at this restaurant depot and they don’t really care that I’m buying for my rabbits – they actually like it.
About $10 for two bunnies. Red/green leaf are almost always $1.99 a pound and I probably use 3 pounds in an average week, and then usually also a pound or so of a third veggie(the type varies) that’s usually between $1.50 and $2.50 a pound. I eat a lot of salads though made with bagged spring mix, and they always get a handful of that for variety and since I have it anyway, and I’d say I probably use 3 or 4 bags a week(they’re usually 2 for $6) but the rabbits and I share those, so I don’t think of them are part of my bunny expenses.
I have probably spent $10 this week (first week we’ve had Oliver). I try to purchase things that are on sale. I bought kale and carrots; I just rinse them and chop the tops off to serve them. I tried giving Oliver a carrot, but surprisingly, he doesn’t like them! Other than that, he just gets to eat what we are currently snacking on, like celery and blackberries.
I probably spend too much on my bunnies… I always buy organic for them, and they get a nice variety. Plus there’s 3 to feed now
Little Smudge loves her romaine lettuce so far
Let’s see what she likes next week….
0 ZERO, zip, nada. I grow all the veggies in my backyard. Of course, in the winter it’s a bit more expensive.
Lucky Catalina
I am going to start my own when I get a house someday.
Am I the only one that is very picky with how vegetables look at the store? I mean, I get Cilantro.. and some of the bunches have black leaves, or mud on it. Ick.
I usually go to a produce store down the road, but if isn’t open, I just go to the grocery store.
I’m picky about what veggies mine get too. Luckily there’s like 5 grocery stores nearby I can go to, one of them being a Whole Foods cross the street from me ![]()
I spend about $25 a week minimum. There is a really great produce store in Berkeley (MontereryMarket.com) that has the best fresh locally grown produce at the best price so I can load up there for about $20 – $25, but if I go to my local grocery store, I have to spend more just to get the same amount.
I’m not really sure how much I spend on veggies *for the bunnies*, being vegan I eat a lot of veggies myself and so we usually splits stuff: “some for my salad, some for the bunnies’ salad”.. hehe. They get a lot of the left over stuff, like the ends of the carrots and tops, the stems I cut off the chard, left over salad that I’m sick of eating, radish/beet tops, and such.
In the winter I’ll spend about $25/wk on produce for my S.O., the buns, and me. Now that its summer, we have a garden and have joined a CSA (community supported agriculture -pay up front for local organic seasonal veggie basket each week), so groceries aren’t produce anymore :-).
My suggestion: get stuff that you’ll eat too so nothing goes to waste! (Example: if I buy cilantro for the bunnies, I’ll try to make something that uses cilantro like bean burritos or pakoras.. mmmm, then the bunnies will also get the stem part that I usually don’t use as well).
Honestly, I’m not very picky about what I get at the store. If it’s dirty, I can wash it, and it’s very rare that any of the stuff is wilted or bad looking (and I shop at a regular old Stop and Shop). I’m most picky about the size of what I get – I want to get the biggest head of lettuce, since it’s sold by the head and not by weight. I hate when it’s all picked over and only the little ones are left.
The only store here has vegetables in terrible condition and I stopped buying them. I have a friend with a garden/greenhouse who gives me things in exchange for me storing their old cars on my lot. I also feed edible weeds and safe leaves to my rabbits but it took me a while to figure out which ones are OK. Winter time is difficult in terms of fresh things, I will buy herbs at the store then because they tend to look fresh. I will feed some dried things such as clover that dries nicely and lastingly without turning to nothing. I also give quite a lot of twigs in the winter time.
All this collecting and drying is time-consuming though.

I know it can be very challenging for others that live in different areas. We are exceptionally lucky in California due to the weather and the good year round produce from local farms. However, I know when I visit my folks on the other side of the U.S, especially in the winter months, I cannot find the wide variety I have here, and even the common ones are not as fresh as they have to be shipped a longer distance. It’s great that you have a deal going on with your neighbors and their greenhouse! What a great way to work around the limited produce quality.
Wow guys, in Greece veggies are so cheap! A romaine lettuce costs only around 0.30 euros. I’d say that I spend less than 4 euros a month. The expensive thing here is the food pellets that cost 12.5 euros per 1.5 kg.
Veggies here are a decent price, my buns just go through alot of them ![]()
bougatsa, how much is hay in Greece?
I think veggies here are fairly expensive – I’m up north so everything in the grocery stores is trucked in from CA or Mexico or something, but the quality is always good, even in the winter (it’s just more expensive). I’m lucky that I can get good quality stuff year round. I can get local produce in the summer, and I have a CSA, but a small head of lettuce is way more expensive than a large head of romaine at the grocery store. It makes sense, since the farmer’s market lettuce tastes far better and is organic (and owning land locally is expensive), but kind of expensive for the bunnies. Now they get a mix of the CSA veggies we get (they take most of the lettuces and all of the leafy tops of veggies) plus some romaine and parsley from the grocery store.
I pay 1.49 each for a head of romaine and red leaf. Cilantro tends to be less than a dollar. Italian parsley is 1.29.
I went to qfc to get something else and I saw they were asking 3.29 for a head of romaine! Insanity!!
