How much did your bunny habitat cost you?

So I am setting up a Cost Page and the habitat cost can really vary depending on what we choose.   

What type of set-up did you use and how much did it cost?

Add separately costs for flooring if you used any (Don’t include the bedding that goes over the flooring  – but just the floor like wood, sheet vinyl, carpet, plastic etc etc)

Our custom made pen: $80 (shelving, wood & aluminum angles)

Flooring Cost - Large Sheet Vinyl  Remnant – $50

TOTAL: $130  (This price ONLY includes the pens and flooring)  The green bins I got at target for 8 bucks I think – and I turned them upside down and cut entry/exit holes in them, and then glued the top.  Looks like we forgot to take that weight off LOL.  We used it when we were adhering the tops.

 

 The pictures below are the set-up in our San Francisco Apartment.  We hadn’t put toys etc in it yet.  I think we JUST set it up and were taking pictures.  It was also easy to disassemble and reassemble at our new place.

Lets see…..I made 3 condos at once, but here is my information for one:

SO, in total, the cage was $43 and the flooring was $20.

i just finished pinky’s rabbitat and ehre’s the cost breakdown:

• 3 1/2 packs (of 13) NIC by rubbermaid for $10 ea at zellers (already had a 1/2 package) = $30
• 2 packs of zip ties from the dollar store = $2
• utility mat from zellers on sale 1/2 price = $6
• sign board for floors (went to a conveniant spot instead of shopping around) = $25
• 2 packs of clips for doors from the dollar store = $2
• fibreglass tension rod to stiffen roof from home depot = $4
• litter box was an old plastic tupperware thing i had already

total = $69

this is the largest size available and the smallest recommended size… with plenty of runtime outside of the cage, of course.

$25  5×8 foot rug from Wal-mart

this will probably need to be replaced once a year from wear and tear

$15  one box of NIC cubes

$5  zipties

a total of APPROXIMATELY $150… FOR ONE BUN!!!

***the cage is a very expensive item.  i could have purchased an xpen and still had money leftover for dinner. lol…  NIC cubes and original set-ups may take more time and creativity… but you really do get more bang for your buck.  i don’t recommend buying a manufactured cage, and if i were to do it over again, i wouldn’t.

i can see why that cage is expensive beka… it’s huge!!!  i don’t think i’ve even seen one that big in stores near me.  your set-up is really fab

My condo cost a bit, but it is quite big and I have 7 rabbits to home, I also had to split a couple up due to fighting and male/female.

I have a middle barrier in the play pen that can be moved down the middle keep them apart but they can still play outside of the cage.

These are in Australian dollars.

 

 

• 26 packs (5 per pack) NIC grids @ $8.49 per pack = $220.74. Purchased at Bunnings
• 4 containers of zip ties @ Bunnings = $12
• utility mats from Red Dot $7, Reject shop $15 & Crazy Clarks $3 = 25.
• Lino remnants from any carpet store =$30
• Carpet remnant =$30 for a big roll which did 2 condos.
• wooden support poles 5 poles @ $6 each =$30. Bunnings cut them in half for free.
• Kitten litter box X 4@ $5.95ea =$23.80 at City Farmers.
• Toys from Big W $20
• Water bowls =$14 from Big W 2 bowls were just ceramic wok bowls for $1.99 each.

We paid $50 or so for a 4′ x 4′ cross-pen.  We built a wooden base for it from some scrap plywood boxes from work that nobody wanted anymore ($0), and about $5 or so for the linoleum tiles to line it and the 2’x4′ to line the edges. 

We also built a three-story “bunny condo” out of an old wooden box being surplused at work.  We cut some “doors” out of the sides, put in a “2nd floor” in the middle from a plank, and cut a hole in the top and put an incline on a hinge.  Also, at one point we built a sleeping box for Bailey when he was a baby..they’re all basically too big to fit in it now, but they like to use it as a “stepladder” to hop up on the condo.

Supplies for the construction cost about $5, for a grand total of $60 and roughly 6-8 hours total elapsed time among the two of us.

The first photo shows the enclosure, right after it was constructed…it normally has toys and boxes in it and isn’t this clean!  Aeryn (castor mini-rex) is on the 2nd floor of the condo, and Bailey and Reno are in front of the old sleeping box.  The bunnies really love their condo, as you can see from the 2nd photo!

we won the NIC condo at bunnyfest so cost =$20 of raffle tickets, lol.

Hareiette has a HUGE cage, which cost about $100.
Before the the condo – Viktor and Pandy had an extra tall x-pen which was about $60 and we used fleece blankets and pee-pee pads underneath. I am sure pee-pee pads have some other less descriptive name, but that’s what all the Haven volunteers call them, lol.

Just a slight amendment to our costs – the linoleum tiles were extras that my mother had so they didn’t cost us anything. Actually it was a box of tiles that had been left at the house she bought so they didn’t cost her anything either! We’re moving to a new house in a few months and we’re already thinking that we’ll build a 2nd condo/bunny area for them that will live in the basement, that way when they go down there they’ll have someplace to hang out.

After I get to know them a little we will be building a custom wood and metal pen for them. I’m not sure yet how much that one will cost.

For super low cost, you can set up an X-Pen 4×4 with a tarp and a dropcloth from Orchard or Home Depot or someplace like that for less that $100.  The pens are expensive and can easily be made using NIC panels for less if someone is not intimidated.  I know that when we first adopted DJ I had NO IDEA what I was doing, and I just followed the shopping list that the rescue gave me.  The volunteers kept telling me how great X-Pens were, and I was too embarassed to say that I did not know what and X-Pen was!  Now I tell people they are puppy exercize pens and they understand better.

I have one of those big Marchioro cages too, on loan from The Haven for Marilyn and her babies.  It is great for a foster set up because it is easy to move and clean, and I can put it up on a table to save floor space.  They cost in the neighborhood of $80 arond here, and I think the exercize pen is a better deal at that price because it can be used for other things.  We use two X-Pens when the buns are out to block off the couch and the rest of the house.

If you use a tarp, make sure your bunnies won’t chew at it. That’s one of the reasons why we built the wooden bottom to ours, because our gang would cut through a tarp like a hot knife through butter. Also, the firm bottom was much easier to clean.
