Hello – I am setting up our bunny’s new cage (getting bunny tomorrow!) and am a little unsure as to how many spots or placements of hay are needed?  I have one hay rack above the litter box but should I wait to put another hay rack or pile of hay until the bunny is litter trained?  Do most set ups really only have one hay rack – over the litter box area?

Second question has to do with rewarding good behavior – do any of you give your bunny treats when they come out of their cage/or go back into their cage when called or encouraged?

        Thanks

i personally only have one hay rack for my rabbit, but i suppose it’s up to you. having multiple hay racks would most likely encourage her to eat more hay, which is always a good thing.
most of the time i have to lure Sienna out with a treat, lol. she doesn’t ever really come to me when i call her unless i have a snack with me that she enjoys.

I have hay in both litter boxes( one is in the cage and one in the excersise pen) and another hay bag in the excersise pen.

He comes out of the cage immediately when we open the door and goes back in at night because I give him his veggies there. We don’t give too many treats, an occasional bite of a strawberry or banana.

While litter training I would only place hay in or above the litter tray to encourage it’s use, otherwise you might find your bunny toileting by the other hay areas. Apart from that, once trained you can add extra piles, I generally only provide hay in the rack above the tray because one big hay mess is enough for me.

On the treats – if bunny is a baby avoid them – buns have sensitive tummies and under 4 months should only be given hay , pellets and water. At 4 months you can very slowly introduce greens – then from 6months old very slowly you can introduce fruit if you wish but that should only be very sparingly
Unless bunny is older and you are sure he / she has already been introduced to them I would just give her / him pellets as rewards ( as well as have them unlimited if he is under 6months)

And I only have one hay rack which is above the litter tray encourages them to poop in litter tray as they poop where they eat. One is fine as long as they always have access to it and it’s always stocked

I have two litter boxes, both with hay in. I don’t use hay racks as my monsters never cared for them. I think it’s more natural to eat off the ground anyway!
