so my bunny’s eye has been wet looking for a long time now. i didnt do anything about it for about a month because i thought it would go away. i got polysporn eye drops for her yesterday and still using them. i dont think it is from shaving cuz i have non, but she may have gotten it from my sis bunny. they both have it now. it may be because of the fur build up in her cage. is there anything else i need to do? and how do i make it stay away?

day 2: hasent shown any signs of infection leaving. should i wash her eyes to get grossness way?

Are those drops that your vet has prescribed? I wouldn’t put anything in her eye not prescribed or advised by the vet.

            Hi,

Has your bunny actually been seen by a vet? It could well be the result of allergies but her eye lids do seem inflammed, and I would have things ruled out before assuming that it is caused by an allergy. It could be dental related, blocked tear ducts etc and is most likely sore, if not irritating for her.

you should see a more rabbit savvy vet 🙂

No vet no matter how well educated on rabbits would or should diagnose over the phone, as problems with weeping eyes can be just the primary symptom of something more problematic.

I think it’s always hard when it comes to money, but honestly it would be best. If it is something else causing the problem then it’s best to treat it early, otherwise things would get worse and it would either mean spending more in the long run or if you really couldn’t afford it putting her down.

Unfortunately something that seems minor can turn into something more serious.

With rabbits it’s not worth waiting and wondering if they will be ok.

I would take her to the vet.

I’m a little confused here.  What do you mean you don’t think it’s from "shaving"? Is that what you meant to say?  If so, what does that have to do with it ?  Fur build up?  I certainly hope you are cleaning her cage regularly.  I agree that a vet needs to see your rabbit before things get much worse.  Let us know how it goes.

well i showed it to a vet befor while she was getrting spayed, and she just said "oh its probably from the shavings, try using a different kind" so i decided to take them out completly.

I agree that it is best to see a vet. Eye problems can be very serious in bunnies. Cadbury had an eye problem that looks very similar to what you posted – after bringing her to the vet, he prescribed antiobiotics. Those worked great, but then two weeks later I had the same problem. This time, we went home with eye drops (can’t remember the name), and that has seemed to clear it up for good. But, that vet said if the drops didn’t work, that they may need to flush her tear duct. Apparently, bunnies’ tear ducts can get clogged very easily, which causes the tears to spill over onto the fur. I would get the vet to check her out –

Are you pulling our chain here?  Now you say your rabbit has a broken toe and you MAY take her to the vet?  This is really not the place to be joking around and if you’re not I’m am very concerned about the welfare of this rabbit.  You sound very irresponsible and don’t seem to know how to care for your rabbit.  I’m sorry if I’m being harsh but there seems to be a slew of people this past month with questionable stories.

Can you imagine the pain your rabbit is in with a broken toe?  There is no question she needs to see a vet ASAP!  And I’m sorry but why on earth would your parents not make that a priority?  I understand the vet is closed tonight but they need to take the rabbit to the vet first thing in the morning.  When adopting an animal parents need to understand the responsibilty that comes with it and that includes the financial responsibility as well. There have been numerous situations here lately where parents are not willing to take any responsibility for their child’s pet and it is extremely frustrating to keep hearing these stories. The pet suffers because of it.  Please let us know the outcome tomorrow.

oOPanicOo – just to give you a bit of background, we have recently had a few different members join our discussion boards that were very inexperienced, and were posting some very disturbing things, and as we are all animal lovers on this board it is very difficult for us to hear about an animal in pain that we cannot help.

Also, many people on this board are extremely experienced in rabbit care – many have had rabbits, been in rabbit rescue, and have worked with rabbits extensively, so please understand that when we say something is serious, it is because of our experience or rabbit knowledge, and it is difficult for us when we know that something can be very serious yet we cannot get the animal the help it needs.

No one means to offend you, but we are trying to emphasize that when you have an animal that is sick or hurt you need to get them to a vet for help. They feel pain and hurt just as anyone else does, so it is the responsible thing to do to ensure that you get your bunny the care she needs. I was your age not too long ago, and I know that when it came down to it and I really wanted something, I could convince my parents, this is one of those situations when you really need to look out for your animals because it is very important to her health.

Thats OK – not everyone knows everything about rabbits right away! Thats what we are here for. Can you do anything around your neighborhood for money? For example, babysit, rake leaves, clean houses etc.? I think if your parents see that you are so caring off your animal that you are willing to work to get good care for her, they will be very impressed by that and maybe even help you out some. Also – I wanted to mention before – if you get your bunny a bigger pen, you can also get her a bigger litterbox which will help her keep all her poops and pees in the right place.

Also – can I ask what her diet is?

well, i just found this website today, which made me realize how fat she really has gotten. i put her on one thid morning actualy. i use to give her 3/4 her food bowl, which i now learned is deadly, so this moring i gave her 3/4 of a cup of pellets, and a couple bananna slices, apple slices, and 2 almonds.

please don’t "consider" taking the poor thing to the vet. I really don’t say what I am about to lightly to scare or worry you unnecessarily, but please do get even the smallest problems with your pet looked at by a professional. My sister’s first well loved and adored house bun developed runny eyes, and she had MANY trips to the vet as nothing would seem to clear it up. Eventually my sis was SO frustrated she demanded tests. Sadly Violet had a tumour in her nose which caused the problems with her eyes, and later on her nose itself was affected.

Our animals are far to precious to leave things to chance, and with rabbits they can go downhill SO quickly that sometimes "waiting for tomorrow" might be a bit too late.

I DO WISH YOU LUCK THOUGH, i can appreciate how frustrated you must feel when you are relying on parents,  make it clear to them that an unhappy bun is an unhappy you, and it’s in their best interests to keep you happy!!

Perhaps your parents should come on and take a look at this site and some of the other ones with information on how fragile rabbits can be.  Something that seems so small and minor can actually be something life threatening.

I truly hope your parents see that taking your rabbit to the vet is a must.  While you may be doing the best you can it makes me wonder about adults who are supposed to be the responsible parties in situations like this one.  I would assume they allowed you to get your rabbit, so I would think they would also want to do what’s right by you and your bunny.

Mmmm that’s a bit strange in my opinion that the vet would say this over the phone without looking at the rabbit. I’m not saying that what the vet says is not true but really good vets would want to see the animal.  Plus your bun has some eye issues going on. I really think it’s important that you see a good vet.  How did she break her toe?  Was it the run in the backyard?

Welcome o0Panic0o.   I am sorry your bunny is going through this and your parents for some reason don’t feel it  necessary to take this poor creature to the vet.  One of the things about having pets is being able to afford them, but I also know that many people never even thought it out –  that animals can be expensive because they will need vet care.  I understand you are learning as we go. My concerns are:

You still have a bunny with eye issues (do you have two with eye issues)?

Are you sure the toe is broken?  How do  you know it’s not part of the foot?  EVEN SO, pain medicine should help relieve this even if the toe or foot cannot be reset.  With breaks like this it would have been best if you got your bunny in right away because IF there was going to be a possibility of this being reset, it would have had to be done in the beginning.  Problems with broken toes and/or broken foots is that it can impair how they walk and cause sore hock in the future, and depending on the break and how the toe is twisted in can be susceptible for future nail and toe injuries.

No vet should have ever given you information over the phone unless you were an ongoing patient, and unless vet has already seen the animal and knows exactly what’s going on.

So, I understand it gets tight, but not allowing a pet to get the proper vet care is actually considered an offense by Animal Care and Control in many areas.  And it doesn’t matter if it is a chicken, a rabbit, a dog, a bird, a lizard.     The reason for this is because we take on the responsibility of an animals life.  They have to depend on us to make sure they are getting the right care. And I know you came here to try and do just that, and I also know that you are at the mercy of you parents and of their decisions.

So however, whatever way possible, you will need to get this bunny to see a rabbit savvy vet.  Check out

The eye problem is not going to go away unless you take your bunny to the vet as everyone keeps advising you to do… Are your bunnies from the same litter? They both need checking out and sooner rather than later. Your vet does not sound rabbt savvy to me, so I suggest you call a different one who will insist on seeing your bunny! Her toe DOES need seeing to. Rabbits are prey creatures so they are designed to hide pain. She may seem fine to you but she will be in some sort of discomfort.

No one on here can really diagnose your rabbits eye problems because we aren’t trained in veterinary medicine and you will see that even the most experienced people on here will use the vet as their first port of call.  I know you say you don’t have the money but perhaps your vet will be able to come to some sort of arrangement with you? My vets are more animal orientated than business like so they are very accommodating when owner can’t pay up immediately.
