Hi, I am getting my two bunnies spayed on Monday. I am wanting to start as soon as i can because one cage is very small. When can I start pre bonding. I am okay if I start sooner but have to go longer because their hormones after the spay.

You can start prebonding even now. Just swap their litter boxes and other items between their cages every few days, and even switch them between their cages. A stuffie for each of them might work well too. Like put one in each cage for a few days to let it get their scents on it, then switch it to watch their reactions.

With a spay, it’s good to prebond for 1-2 months while their hormones level off, then you can start bonding them.

At least one month but it can take up to 6 months for their hormones to disipate. Though I think this is rare. Aim for one month. If they are still exhibiting hormonal signs, wait another month

Edit: Woops, read your post wrong! You can start pre bonding now.

Yepp, start prebonding now, but give them a week off while they recover from their spays before you start swapping again

Okay thanks! Asriel and Bombour, Can I use a towel instead of the stuffed animal? Just to clarify, I can start pre bonding before the spay and then wait a week and then continue with pre bonding? How long do i need to do pre bonding

You should do prebonding for at least a month And yes, the break after their spay is so they’re not being moved around and made uncomfortable while they’re recovering from the surgery

You need to wait 4 -6 weeks after the spay for their hormones to go too, so by the end of that period, if you prebond through it, you should be ready for bonding.

A towel could work too, if you can, bunch it up with an elastic or something so it’s more compact. A lot of times it’s used for bunnies that are humpers.

And yes, prebond starting now, take a break for a week after the spay, then go back to it for another 4-6 weeks. Hopefully it’ll go smoothly! I know you’re moving, so make sure when you move to make one area completely bunny free until you bond them. You need neutral territory when you’re in the beginning stages of bonding.

Will moving have any affect on the bonding?

If anything it might actually help it because it’s new territory for both girls. So when you’re doing bonding sessions in another 6ish weeks, almost every room will be neutral territory to them.

It might work in your favour as everywhere will be neutral.

Okay thanks! When i bond them should it be in a big or small cage? Should I do it in the same place every time?

You’ll have to play it based on their interactions. Some bunnies do well in a larger area and others in a smaller area. If they’re prone to chasing, I might do it in a smaller area so there’s less surface area for chasing to occur.

Why don’t you check out the bonding general info tab And maybe have a read through some previous bonding journals to get a rough idea. One thing to remember, no pair is the same.
