The other day, my 5 month old dwarf satin/ dutch mix rabbit (Peter) learned something fun. He can use the litter pan to jump out of the cage! Now the pan is only lifting him a couple inches at best, so I’m fairly sure he will be able to do this on his own soon enough. We’ve rearranged the cage so he can’t (hopefully) get out again, but I need to know how high he’ll probably end up being able to hop if I’m going to get a cage that he can’t slip out of. I was reading about the show buns at the agility contests in europe, and am a touch worried.
How high is the highest that your bun has ever jumped?
They can jump higher than you think. Mine can easily jump on the couch or in a chair if they want to. Some people have said 36 inches isn’t high enough for their buns. What sort of a cage is this? The kind with a door on top? Have you considered housing your bunny in a dog exercise pen? You could also make a condo for them using NIC panels.
Hmm, my Tans are agile little things. One of them has successfully jumped out of her 36″ inch x-pen. While neither of my Lionheads will even really jump up on boxes unless they’re really low.
How high is his cage currently?
Harley has jumped over a gate that was above my hip bone! I don’t know how he did it…but some buns are just talented that way lol
Moose can clear the top of the couch from a position on the floor, not running. Yeah…. they can jump high.
Haha… Monty can escape a 4′ pen easily. He doesn’t even do anything when he escapes… Just sleeps. I don’t get it. I had to put a lid on his x-pen to keep him inside.
Beyond just jumping, bunnies can also CLIMB. I thought I had a baby gate my buns couldn’t get over, ha. Powder climbed to the top, then stood balancing on the top of it (which was way too thin for such a big bun) until I came and rescued him. *sigh* So yeah if he’s determined, get a lid. ![]()
It is a dog exercise pen, almost 2 foot tall. The floor is fairly smooth, so he didn’t seem to think that he could do it. He has since found out otherwise. Is there something th at can be stretched over it that he can’t chew through, but will keep him in?
Oh yeah, my baby bun demonstrated the other day that she not only can jump, but also climb. I saw her climbed the side of her cage the other day, I thought she was pretending to be a hamster.
Lucy can jump 28″ easily, and I’m sure she’d be able to jump higher.
Ah yes. Monkey has climbed out of her pen several times. She seems to have gotten lazier lately though, so maybe I can stop leaving a litter box and water bowl out in the living room… lol
The past two days I have woken up to 2 bunnies scratching at my bedroom door. I freak out every time. When I go check on the cage to see how they get out it’s still closed perfectly. my cage is two grids high right now and I knew Harley could jump that, but not Sally. I guess she is getting impatient that momma has been sleeping in lately and they are ready for their breakfast!
I won’t add a top to the cage for my own reasons but my buns are rather well behaved so I’m just going to take Monkeybun’s idea and leave out some hay for them to munch on if they get out way too early for me haha. (they can drink from the dog’s water hole)
I’m not sure what you could drape over the top at night. I think someone a few months back had a problem with her bun jumping out of the xpen and she just draped a sheet over the side of the xpen and the fact that the bunny couldn’t see the other side of the xpen made him stop climbing out. You can try that first, I guess…
And 2 feet? That’s not very tall. Your bun will most likely be able to clear that with no effort in no time. Is there a possibility you can just get a taller xpen? They say the recommended height is at least 36in.
I’ve used cardboard and a sheet. Both have worked for me.
My little Bridge Mini Rex used to astound me on a daily basis with how high he could jump.
LOL – my little Nethie dwarf can just about jump out of his skin!!!! I don’t think anyone has told him he’s a rabbit and he’s suposed to jump, he’s quite happy just hopping along
)
I’m sorry NewBunnyOwner123, I did laugh, I actually thought it would be a lovely way to wake up, why don’t you leave your door open and then you can be gently woken up with bunny butt in your face! Lol x
Oh my! I had plans to buy the large/tall enclosure soon, but hearing that they can climb…maybe fashioning a lid would be better. I would hate for him to climb up too high and fall down.
I’ll have to think a bit more on this, thank you everyone for your suggestions and experiences! Quite a few made me smile and I look forward to sharing them with my fiance. :3
They have lids that are designed to go on dog x-pens, usually the pen maker has them.
My rabbit Simba is only 4 months old he’s a registered lionhead and he’s able to jump on my bed without standing on anything to help him I was wondering if it’s normal for a very small young rabbit to jump 3ft on to a bed because it’s becoming impossible to keep him in a cage since I don’t have a normal cage with a top on it. Just wondering if it normal for him to jump that high.
Clover weighed 14 pounds, and easily made 36″ verticals regularly. Pretty sure she could go higher had she wanted.
