I am posting this to let people know there are ways to view your veterinarians license and if they have had any complaints filed and disclipinary actions taken against them.  This information is made available through Freedom of Information.  In the state of Michigan- if you find that any medical professional has any disclipanary actions taken against them- you can request by mail to have the requested reports mailed to you.  This includes veterinarians, pharmacists, dentists, social workers, etc.

Out of the 7 local vet clinics in my area- 2 had disclipinary action taken against them.  One of these vets was reported by one of his employees, the other was reported by his clients.  And these are only the cases where the individuals were determined enough to follow thru with the paperwork and documention necessary to file a claim to be investigated.

One of these vets in particular- I don’t even know how he can sleep at night.  The reports that I have read are horrible.  But  he is a really great people person.  He has been voted “best vet” in our local “Best of ..” sponsored by our local newspaper- a few times.   The word is slowly getting out about him- but there are some owners that just don’t care enough to request the info.  He is a nice guy and provides cheap vet care- so they are happy.  Some examples include- not weighing the pet before surgery- estimated by eyesight to determine anesthesia- the kitten died.  Not performing surgeries that he said he did (and charged for).

So please look online and see how to verify your veterinarian’s license.  If you live in Michigan here is the link…..

I am not saying that other vets do not make mistakes- I am sure that everyone does.  But if you find a medical professional that has multiple violations that is a clear warning that something is WRONG.  Disciplines by the state are not made lightly.  And for every cases that did make it thru- think of how many that were never even filed due to some fancy schmoozing or uncaring owners.

This is a valuable tool that most people are unaware of.  Heck, check your own medical doctor’s license too!  Most likely the request will have to be mailed and the report will have to be mailed- it is not done via email- most likely to prevent changing the reports.  But be persistent and take the extra time and effort to see what is really going on.

        Julie

I never even considered that it was possible to view a vet’s license. I just looked up the vets that I use and was happy to discover there are no violations on their records.

here is a link to all the states: http://www.jugglingcats.com/veterinary/vet_license.htm

Here’s the CA link if anyone is interested:

Holiday & Fiesta were under Dr Harvey’s care before they flew to Missouri. My vet, Ava Frick knows Dr Harvey personally – so how neat!

Normally, I use the VCA in Oakland where Dr. Harvey worked for about 5 years and trained many of the staff vets in rabbit care (they have 3 ‘really good’ bunny docs). But as my gf will only allow the very best touch her baby, I figured I might as well shift my business that way too.
