I don’t have a garden, so I’ve been taking my rabbit out to a quiet park with a harness to let him play in the grass. I know that new situations are stressful for rabbits, but also that enrichment is good for them, so I’m a bit torn and having trouble figuring out whether it’s worth it overall or not.

He definitely seems to dislike being in the carrier (I put him in it for the 10 minute walk to the park), so he avoids getting in, and kicks his legs when I let him out back at home. But when I get him out at the park, he explores, runs around, and eats grass etc. It just feels really hard to tell whether the running around is from fear or excitement?! If he was really scared, I’m thinking he would probably huddle in one spot and not want to explore. But maybe he is running around because he doesn’t feel safe enough to huddle anywhere? I wish he could just tell me whether he enjoyed it or not. I want to be able to take him out because he gets quite destructive when he’s bored, and I’m hoping he can take out some of his burrowing-energy out in the wild instead of on the carpet. But I don’t want to keep trying if it’s actually just making him overall unhappy. :/

I can’t answer this, I just want to caution you about harnesses. There have been several members here who have had bunnies break legs and spines while in the harness. The bunny gets spooked and the rest is history. I know you say it’s a quiet park, but anything can scare a bunny. Could you set up an x-pen instead and let him run around that? When I lived in an area with a quiet park I used to put mine in an x-pen, that way if anything spooked them they couldn’t hurt themselves.
