We have so many names here….how did you pick out names for your buns?
Tammo was named after a character from the Redwall book series (RIP Brian Jacques), “Tamello De Fformelo Tussock”, a fighting hare. My sister wanted to name him “Snickers” but I wanted something more original for our little guy. I’m not sure where Remi came from…my sister named him, lol. After we adopted Peppy we noticed a striking resemblance to a character from the Starfox game series, “Peppy Hare”. Okay so my bun is a girl and the character is male, but…details details
oooh fun topic!
Rorschach was originally named salt by his previous owner. One day it clicked that his face looks like those rorschach tests [and the character from watchmen]
Nikka was originally named pepper and since I renamed Rorschach I decided to think of a new name for her. she’s gorgeous, but she can be a total diva princess. So I thought, what’s a name that sounds like a beotchy pretty girl… and Nikka popped into my head. hahaha. I love her to pieces though =P
Lago is just short for Lagomorph. One of my roommates suggested it and it stuck. When I took her to the vet once, he thought she didn’t have a name yet because they call their unnamed rabbits lago on the paperwork. Panko was named after the japanese breadcrumbs because of his nice goldish color (I was feeling hungry at the time and I was thinking of panko breaded tuna).
My husband named him…he was annoyed with me for bringing him home (he likes him now though), and insisted on naming him Rufus…mainly because he knew I hated the name, the stinker lol. It has grown on me, although I still find myself calling him Rufie.
Merry came with her name – I have no idea how she got it. But it seems to fit . If I end up with baby bunny I’m going to change his name… Hmm but I haven’t figured out what criteria I’ll use.
Cainan, may I suggest you try out “Pippin” for the new little guy?
I just flipped through a baby name book and came up with a list that I liked. After being with my girls and learning more about their personalities I picked names off my list that “fit.” Nothing special.
My little grey dutch girl is Kya (or Kaya, or Kiah) whichever I feel like because I loved the name. My big black and white girl is Galaxy (Gal for short) and I named her that because her colors look celestial and because I had just watched Splinterheads and liked the character.
I adopted Dutchess, so she came with her name. I believe it is safe to say she was named Dutchess because she is a Dutch breed. Either the owner was putting a pun on it or didn’t know how to spell, but either well it is spelled incorrectly. They asked me at the HS if I wanted to change her name, but I hadn’t even known I could (first time adopter), and my mom was right next to me and freaked out saying I couldn’t change her name. So it stuck. One day I just blurted out “Dutchess Marie!” when she was trying to dig up the carpet and she stopped and looked at me, so she’s been Dutchess Marie ever since.
Little diva.
Monkey liked to climb on stuff, so Monkey seemed to fit her. It was either that, or Ninja. But she’s not so ninja. She was constantly tripping over things, running into things.. not so graceful So she’s my little Monkey.
Moose.. was a BB named bunny. I didn’t know what to name him, but I did know it had to be an animal name. So I posted here… and Moose was the best fit for him that was mentioned
Smudge was being called Chester when e picked her up from where she was. A grey and white girl bunny named Chester. No way. So.. we brought her home, and she became Smudge, after the little smudge of grey across her face. She didn’t get an animal name as she was just going to be a foster… well. I failed at that, so she’s staying. And I call her Smudge Bug now, so she has an animal name
Indiana Jones aka “Indybun” ahhh…there is no better name to fit him. I wanted to have cool and different names for my rabbits, nothing like “fluff” and such (no offense to Fluff buns btw) but I just wanted something really different. Indy is very adventurous and I love Harrison Ford!! Other than that I have no idea but when I look at him he is definitely Indiana for sure.
Bun. Her registered name is Randy’s Crystal …..yuck? So her name was Crystal and I didn’t like it at all…and then nothing else fit but Bun. She actually knows her name is Bun now and perks right up when I start calling her name.
Bumblebee. Her name was originally going to be Blossom when I first got her, but it didn’t feel right. Eventually….another love of action movies helped name another bunbun…..my love of Bumblebee from Transformers took hold with how she almost has stripes. Her name has been fun with lots of nicknames such ass…Bumblebutt, Bumbee, Bee, Queen Bee, Bumblez , etc haha!
Bagheera. Originally Lesley wanted me to name him Smudge but I wasn’t sold on it. My love of the Jungle Book saw the name Bagheera fitting even though he isn’t black…but he almost has the same personality as Bagheera from the Disney movie! I call him Baggy most of the time.
Lion. Lion is white…and white lions are gorgeous. I didn’t put much thought into that one other than that hehe.
Velvet….oh poor Velvet….she was originally a he, and his name was Luke Skybinker …a spin off of Luke Skywalker of course from Star Wars. …she wasn’t even my rabbit ….then he turned in a she…and my mom named her Velvet since she’s a rex pushie.

Cainan, may I suggest you try out “Pippin” for the new little guy?![]()
hee hee I had thought of that!
Mine are named after sweets.
Jersey after Jersey Caramels and Rumball after Rum Balls.
& TimTim? Well I’m not entirely sure why I chose that name. I tried a few and that one seemed to fit. There was a member who use to post (Liza) with a grey rabbit Timothy aka Timmi. I think he inspired the name mostly.
Meadow is named after Meadow Soprano from the HBO show, “The Sopranos”.
Max is named Max because I love that name.
DH picked Otto’s name. I knew we wanted people names for our pets and I had a whole list of names I liked but DH kept vetoing them. One day he suggested Otto and that’s what we went with! We actually had his name picked out before he came home with us. Later I realized that Otto the Orange is the mascot for DH’s favorite team (Syracuse) so maybe it was a subconscious pick. We usually call him Otter or I call him Otto Bear.
Since Otto is a palindrome, I thought Hannah would be a cute name for our next bunny (anybody read the story “Hannah is a Palindrome” in school? Otto is another character in the story). When we adopted Hannah her name was Merlin, but we didn’t think it fit and I talked DH into Hannah. Now we usually call her Handa (or Handa Bear) and sometimes The Mer or Mersical.
Basil- well… it just fit him so perfectly… I cant explain it. RIP my sweet boy…
Thistle- he was a BB voted name! I was having a horrible time getting a name to stick! it was a toss up between Cadburry or Thistle and well his personality wasnt Cadburryish and his markings look spikey so Thistle was a good pick and all the BBers agreed!
I had a name in mind as soon as I saw chacha bun.
her given name is Koucha, it means black tea in Japanese.
I like food names lol.
She is often called Chacha bun by me, and Kouchapin by my dad.
Brit, can you write out how you pronounce Koucha? I’ve always wondered if it’s Koo-cha or Kow-cha or something else.
Linguistic nerd ^
Ugh, Mr. Bun-Bun’s name is terribly uncreative. Since he lived in our clinic for 2 weeks before I officially adopted him, we were all calling him that the whole time (from his original name, “Bunny” which is even worse) and it stuck. Once I brought him home I realized I couldn’t rename him, nothing would stick. I have a lot of great names saved away, but can’t adopt any more animals for now, so…
My other animals are cats, Pepino (Spanish for cucumber) and Misha (which means female cat in Quiche which is native Guatemalan.)
Elrohwen, I believe it is said Koocha hehehe.
Jersey, yay another owner with food names
Interesting, I didn’t know what Koucha meant. It suits her well.
My bunnies names don’t have very interesting stories. When I brought Stormy home I wanted to call him Thumper because I love the character Thumper, even though it was extremely unoriginal and I usually like very original names. I love naming animals and I usually put a lot of thought into it. His fur colouring really reminded me of the sky before a summer thunder storm so I went with Stormy and it fits him well.
When I got Bindi I didn’t know if he was a boy or a girl and I didn’t want to stress him out by checking right away (he has such long fur it was really hard to determine). I wanted to name him right away so I decided to chose a name that could be either or. I really liked the name Bindi (I took it from the Crocodile Hunter’s daughter, she’s so adorable). I guess it’s more of a girl name but he doesn’t seem to mind. I just ended up sticking the Loo on there and that became his name.
Olivia I wanted to name a very girly girl name. She was so beautiful and dainty. My little niece was over when I brought her home and Emily fell in love with the bunny so I let her chose the name. She couldn’t think of any so I wrote up a list of about 20 girly names that I liked and she chose Olivia from the list. I think it suits her really well. Emily is very proud of naming the bunny. I had a friend in high school named Olivia and she was gorgeous and had these big beautiful eyes just like my Olivia, so I really like the name. Very girly.
What about your other animal’s names? (for those who have non-bunny pets). I just love names and naming stories!!
My cats Andy and Mystee were named when we got them. My bridge kitty Nefera was named Susie Q at the shelter but I didn’t like it so I named her Nefera which is Ancient Egyptian for Beautiful. She had the most beautiful colour and markings. We called her Fera for short. My kitten (she’s actually about 4 but we still call her the kitten) is a tabby with beautiful markings so I wanted to name her something jungle-esque and therefore, Savana. We decided not to spell it the long way “Savannah”.
My horse’s registered name is Riverbreeze Mystic Bay. I bought her as a baby and they were calling her “Missy” which I really disliked but I left it until I moved her to a new barn a few months later and my friend’s horse was named “Missy” so I needed to change the name. My sister suggested “Winnie” because she thought it was a cute name for a horse and my little horse was always making these ear-piercing whinnies so that became her name. My bridge horse had an interesting name (at least I think so). She was a racehorse and her registered name was J.J. Porter. I didn’t want to call her JJ; a terrible name for a girl I thought. I was 16 and she was my first horse. I always said my horse would be my best friend so I named her “Tovarish” which is Russian for “friend”. We called her “Tova” for short.
wow lpt!! All of your rabbits names fit them
When I was growing up, I had a few cats. One persian named lady ashley, another one named link.. yes from zelda.
And a pomeranian named yoda.
Koucha’s name is often mispronounced at the vet lol.
‘Kucha’
O_o
so is chacha pronounced kucha?
No mocha
People often mispronounce her name at the vet like that lol!!!
I just say call her Chacha..
The Last Mimzy arrived on DVD about the same time that my Mimzy bun did. He was with two other bunnies, male REW’s, and he was so small and dainty and being pushed around by them, we figured he was a girl. I’d originally named him Toffee (and one of the other buns was Marshmallow) and then we realized there were two white bunnies…so I tentatively named them, Wiz and Momiji. (DNAngel and Fruits Basket) Wiz was picked up by a neighbor, I think, but Momiji disappeared before winter hit and he was so ill looking we think he had to have died or been taken by predators.
So Mimzy got his different name and then we found out that our ‘girl’ bunny was a boy! 0_o I still feel bad about all the months I had been calling him “she” and “little girl”.
We kept the name because by then it had stuck. I think it was not long after my first post at BB as MimzMum.
Pip was named for a character in the movie “Enchanted”, one of my daughter’s then-favorites. Bought her at Petco when they were still selling bunnies (bad, I know, but she was the last one before Xmas and we took pity on her) We mis-gendered her too…I wanted to call her BigWig (I was heavily influenced by Watership Down at the time) but upon realizing her feminine side, we felt we should keep the name Pip since it could be either/or.
Fiver was also my WD choice…when I first held him, scared and pitiful, and yet uncannily comfortable with me at Petco, (he was a ‘returned bunny’ that was up for adoption) I felt the name come immediately to mind. He must’ve been psychic too…as he was certain he was coming home with me even before I knew he was!
He’s our smallest boy too, so the name really works for him. He is very oversensitive and it’s taken me almost the whole 3-4 years he’s been with us to gain his trust.
Jenna (yorkie) was ‘Jenny’ when we rescued her, but my daughter didn’t like that name, so we morphed it to Jenna, after the female sled dog in Balto. She really thinks she’s a sled dog too as she pulls me down the road through the snow on our walks…so it fits. If I’d gotten her as a puppy, LPT, oddly enough I might have been tempted to name her SuzyQ as that was the name of the one small dog I had as a child. Since she’s like a Beanie Baby compared to all the big dogs I’ve had since then, mostly we just call her, “The Bean.”
Tooey, our black cat, is a LONG story. I’d lost my beloved original black cat, Peepiceek (yes, from Prince Caspian/Narnia) in April of 1999 from cancer, so by December that year I was ready for another black cat. We found this one in the pet shop, actually paid the outrageous price for her and then I had to go have a crown fitted, so she slept on hubby’s shoulder for two hours in the car immediately afterward.
I was holding her in my lap on the way home and asking her what her name was. She replied, “Mew!” So since Pokemon, the Movie, was huge at that time, we decided on Mew (spelled Myuu, like the Japanese version) and over time this was changed to Mewtwo when we realized what a terror she’d become. This evolved to Tooey for obvious reasons. Most of the time she’s pulling so many faux pas’ we just call her Toopid. (lovingly so, however)
Griffyn was also named for a movie, sort of. My son wanted to call him Sooty and I didn’t like that. Quest for Camelot was on the t.v. and I thought I’d name him Aiden after the ‘silver wing falcon’ in the movie, since his fur color was tinged with a silverish grey. That didn’t sound right and the next scene was the bad guy and his gryphon…so that became his name, spelled “Griffyn” for some originality.
Even so, most of the time we just call him “Cutie”.
Hello Kitty got her name because as she walked into our yard one summer like she owned it I just said, “Well Hello, kitty.” It stuck.
Otherwise I’d have to call her something more sinister…like the Wicked Witch of the West. Come to think of it, Elpheba would suit her to a “t”. >.<
Mine is an albino Lionhead. She was docile at first, but her queen personality came out pretty quick. She demands to be treated like royalty, she looks regal enough, so her name is only fitting.
Victoria,
Ooo I didnt know We could mention our other pets names!
LPT, I LOVE your first horses name!
Horses:
Lakota- registered paint his registered name is William Otoe he has some really world famous bloodlines in him his previous owner called him “willie” ugh! lol All I could think of was the movie free willy and Lakota was defiantly NOT free! lol He was nicknamed “bubba” and still answers to that sometimes lol I decided to honor the paint breed backround with Native Americans so I decided to name him Lakota we have a amazing bond and later on I realized the meaning of the name Lakota! it means friend and it was a perfect fit!
Bo-Jangles- a little buckskin paint he was originally named “Buck” how original for a buckskin horse bleh! He has a pony attitude in a small horses body! and well… Bo-Jangles aka Bo just sounded like a funny pony name and it stuck! lol
Stormy- ( LPT I have a BIIG Stormy and you have a cute lil Stormy lol) Arabian paint that is extremely spirited!!! He is a handfull but I love him he is called a tri colored paint aka a bay paint so of course his name was “Baby” get it? BAYby? he was from the same owner Bo was from this guy was real original with names ugh! Anyway we had a hard time naming him till that night we brought him home the worlds worst storm came and you could see him rearing and hear him neighing when lightning would flash! he wasnt sacred but just seemed to feel the energy of that storm and so that is what we named him! Storm aka Stormy!
Chief- my brothers horse. registered paint. He is a bay paint and a conformational nightmare! lol Poor guy if you know alot about horses you will understand what Im about to say!lol… he has high withers and is built waaay downhill and is slightly swayback but he is very calm and sweet so we over look his flaws he came with his name Chief. Like a Indian Chief and well it dosent fit his personality because he is the underdog of our 4 but we like that name so it stayed! lol
Cats:
Sky- you guys have heard of him hes the bunny boy! lol he loves bunnies!
He is a mix breed and a rescue along with his brother we found them abandoned so we hand raised them and well they are the sweetest cats alive! Anyway Sky is mine he is small and black and white he has kinda simailar markings like a dutch bunny lol maybe that is why he likes bunnies! lol anyway he is just awesome and I love him! his eyes were blue when I found him and Sky just stuck!
Catirha- (cat-truh) I didnt name him I swear! lol My sis did I dont knw where she got that idea from but thats his name! lol when my sis died he started staying with my brother and is very needy but we love him anyway.
Dog:
Mocha!- LOL I am good at having the same names as other peoples buns on here! lol He is a chocolate lab (hence the name) and amazingly sweet and awesome!
We have cows and they have names too and we have chikens and ducks and pigs as well but this post would be forever long with all their names! lol
I love the name Bo Jangles. We have a pony at my barn with that name. It’s adorable.
@Lintini, when I was in high school my family got a black lab that I named Indy because “We named the DOG Indiana.”
I named Kate and Spence after Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. They were originally Snowball and Zeus. Neither name really suited them or me. Since they were already bonded I thought they should have names that suggested they were a pair. I never really feel like either is a ‘dominant’ bunny to other and they’re very cute and romantic together but they’re also very funny, so the names seemed appropriate. And to make it even more perfect, Katharine Hepburn actually played a characted named Bunny Watson in the movie Desk Set.
My tortoise is Hajji Bektash, who was a Sufi (Islamic mystic). The name was mostly my boyfriend’s choice, he named the tortoise and I named the bunnies. It seems appropriate since he’s a central asian tortoise and tortoises just seem like wise old mystics.
Ok I’ll add our other pets.
Riley, our Eclectus parrot, was originally a breeder from a bad situation…he came with the name Grigio, after wine…since we don’t drink wine anyway and wanted him to have a fresh start, we named him Riley. As in, he’s going to be living the life of Riley with us. It fits him, I think!
Dexter, our African Grey parrot, came with his name. I love it, and he knows his name well, so of course we kept it.
Jasmine, my kitty, was adopted by me the week before I moved out of my parents house lol…I don’t know what I was thinking, but I made it work! She had been a stray since birth, and was named Snowy by the shelter as she was mostly white at the time. I instantly knew her name was Jasmine, and over the years it has turned into Jazzy, and Jazz the spazz.
Jesse, my oldest dog, was found in a home with his dead owner (sad!) and was about to be taken to the shelter…my name had been on a waiting list for a small dog (as that’s all my parents would allow me to get, I was 15 at the time) and they brought him to see me first. It was love at first sight, and I named him after my favorite singer at the time lol. He also has like 4 middle names from different boys that I liked over the next couple of years…typical teenager I guess!
Kita, our husky, is actually Makita after a brand of tools that hubby uses. I wish we had picked a less feminine sounding name…but it still seems to fit him.
I love Alice in Wonderland (book, movie, whatever) and that is one of the reasons I wanted a white-ish rabbit. I named him HATTER after the Mad Hatter! He fits his name perfectly…
Oh, I forgot to mention….Hatter’s original name (from the animal shelter) was Gable….blah! Everytime I look at Hatter and I try to imagine calling him Gable and I want to yack….
Thumper.. The most unoriginal name out there for a bunny, I’ve never even seen Bambi -.- I didn’t know if she was a boy or girl when I got her so I thought it was a multi-gender name I guess. I’ve had many dogs, cats, and smaller animals and I tend to call them by their breed. So Thumper is bunbun to me
I’ve always really liked the name “Flower” for a girl bunny. Flower is the name of the skunk who is Thumper’s friend in Bambi.
i like silly names lol. most of my animals have food related names or foreign names. Before i met the love of my life (bun) i was set on getting a yellow and white BIG rabbit and to name it popcorn, completely insanely inlove with that idea, so time comes i wind up with my black self jersey wooly, hes small skinny and anything but yellow and white, so i gave him a title (sir madam prince knight) Prince-
now how was popcorn going to come into play? i wasnt going to let that name go, so here comes the german in me, his name was soon Prince Von Verbrannt Puffmais , meaning prince of burnt popcorn.
ive been waiting to get a new bun and i allready have fun silly names ready. for example my cats name is kasenbrenzen, (keizer) it means cheese pretzel.
Well, I’m a big Legend of Zelda fan. So we named Link his name, and changed Navi’s name to fit.
I like “popcorn”. When my rabbits are excited they look like popcorn.
ohhh i love loz too, i used to have a fish vire and syger. but popcorn is just such a perfect name for a happy buns, one day ill be able to use it. i should consider changeing Prince to Tyrantt with his bunny nipping rage
My bun started out as Willie cause my daughter liked the name. Once we went to get him neutered, she became Nillie because the vet called saying, there is a problem. My heart sunk….we cannot neuter your rabbit is what they said. I asked why expecting a horrible situation, and they busted out laughing saying willie is a she and they would have to spay her!!!!!!! So we tried to re-name her something that fit her sex a little better that still sounded the same.
If I had it to do over again with a baby, I would name it Bun Jovi after the band Bon Jovi. (my absolute most fav band of all time) my kids thought I was nuts and it was a “family” decision on the name so I lost
Cheddar:
I picked out the name Cheddar months before I even had a pet. Then I decided that I wanted an orange Holland lop. I wanted orange because it was a nice color, but my decision was probably influenced by the name I had already picked out.
Pepperoni:
I’ve always thought naming animals food names was funny, so I decided that I would name all my pets with food names. My boyfriend and I had fun coming up with names for our new little holland lop doe…Cheeto, Potato, Peanut, Porkchop…many came up. But then we thought of Pepperoni and thought that was pretty cute and stuck with it even though she looks nothing like a pepperoni. Now her name is basically Poopy because of the pooping habit she had as a baby and still now occassionally.
Meatball:
This was an easy one. He was VERY round as a baby and his coloring was perfect, so Meatball it was.
