How cold can bunnies tolerate, safely?

Hi everyone! I live in NJ and we were hit pretty hard by the hurricane. The electricity is out, with no ETA on when it will be back. I moved Chester to his smaller more portable cage, because the big one is right by a drafty window. I brought him into the bedroom, which has been slightly warmer than the rest of the apartment, and I put a blanket partially over his cage to help retain his warmth. It’s been about 57 degrees in my apartment but there’s a good chance it’s going to get colder tonight. Should I be worried? is there anything else I can do? He’s a jersey wooly, so he’s got lots of fluff.

Rabbits can tolerate cold better than heat so he should be fine especially since he’s inside. I think he will be fine.

I hope you get your electricity back soon and can return to normal. I cannot imagine what you are going through. Stay safe.

I agree. The number I usually remember is 55 degrees as a temp where a bunny is still comfortable. Without a draft, and blankets he may feel warmer than you.
If you give your bunny a small shelter in his cage, like an upside down cardboard box with a piece of towel inside, he can be totally out of a draft and snuggle on or in the towel like a blankie.

I have been thinking about you guys this week. We have more hurricanes here in FL (I’ve been here for several years and 4 hit in a 2 year period) and I always was glad to be hot when our power went out rather than cold. I am afraid of the conditions you are facing, so my thoughts are with you tonight. Don’t hesitate to get a hotel room miles away if they have power, though I know that’s probably not an option now. Have you ever used a space blanket, those tiny silver sheets they sell for camping? They work very well.
