Okay so I feel so silly posting this but I’m seriously getting worried and I’m not sure what to do. I’m going to be traveling for about 3 weeks and traveling while I’m traveling…not staying in one place that whole time. I don’t want to take Chubs and subject him to all that stress but I don’t know who to leave him with or…( I have a close friend who has a bunny and I know would take care of him but she can only come check in one him a couple times a day which means he’d still be alone so often! I also have someone willing to let him stay at their house but I don’t know them well and am worried about that because it’s for so long. What do I do??? I feel like a paranoid little mom but I’m getting really anxious! Any ideas???

I can totally understand this feeling…this is why I don’t go anywhere! ^_^
I would think I’d feel better with the person who knows how to take care of bunnies. Is there any way Chubs could stay with her instead of just being visited?
Believe me…if I lived close, I’d take care of him, but I have to admit, you’d have a hard time getting him back! He’s so adorable!

Well she has a dog, 2 cats and a bunny herself. The dog is not allowed around her bunny (he lives in her room and is only out for a few hours a day). Chubs has free run of our house and HATES being caged for a long period of time so I could let him stay with her and be locked up a lot more than he is used to…or he can stay home and be visited like I said, but I’m just sad to leave him alone for so much time. However, we have had a bunny date with our bunnies and it went okay so maybe he would like it more with company near by? I just feel stuck.

ask your vet- many times they will have great customers who can babysit your bun while you’re gone. Your vet may even be willing to babysit- mine does!

No ideas, but print the bun sitter papers under the bunny info tab and fill those out. I know it would give me some peace of mind.

I would ask at your vet clinic if any of the employees doing any pet sitting and if they are experienced with rabbits.  I work at a vet clinic and I pet sit for certain pets- some I petsit at their house (costs more) and some dogs I will bring home with me and they are “part of the family” while I am watching them.

I have no idea where you are but, I’ve just posted ads offering to bunnysit. If you’re anywhere near me, I could do it.

Thanks everybody, I actually think I might have found a solution. It seems that a friend of a friend has had bunnies and is willing to let him stay with her while we are gone. Where are you located furface? I’m in MN.

The best time to find a petsitter is waaayyy b/f you need them!  There are several petsitting associations that you can check out online (something like international pet sitters organization?).  I also concur w/ Katnip, ask your vet for suggestions and if they have staff that offer these services.

I just got back from a long weekend in Denver area.  I have a regular pet sitter that I have used for years.  I pay for 2 visits a day for my 4 cats & 2 rabbits.  2 of my cats get meds twice a day.  I feel good about the twice a day for everyone (cats & rabbits), but it does get pricey.  I always have to budget my petsitter into my travel costs.

                          I’m in Kitchener, Ontario.
I’m glad you found a solution.

My vet does board rabbits – it is an exotics only practice and right now ( with school ending) the boarding room is FULL.

The nice thing is that the boarding room is right off the main room – I peek in when I was in to buy hay/oxbow – so they get to see lots of people. Plus this vet does great leafy greens twice a day.

It was expensive to board ( 17 dollars per day) but she had a roomy pen ( not a cage) and I knew that they knew her and her medical history should anything happen- But yeah – I reserve her stays WAY in advance if it is going to be a “prime time” for vacations.

And Yes – welcome to the “Planning for a weekend getaway ( or more)with animals requires the skills of Napoleon moving his army across Europe”

Sounds like you found a good solution with the friend of a friend.
Write up your daily routine instructions, stock up on all your supplies to drop off, and include any favorite toys along with your cage.
I used to give a sock to my sitter and we tied it to the bars so Spockie could smell me. He licked it!(Didn’t chew it. Don’t let it stay if it starts to get eaten.)

I left him with a lovely couple whose kids were grown, and who didn’t have any pets. No threats to my bunny, and full attention. They did very well, and once we were established, they offered to sit every time I needed someone. The tricky part is finding a sitter you trust, but once done, you have a reliable resource.

Sounds like that is a good solution.   Check out our petsitter guide from the Bunny Info page -  may be helpful.

IF you ever do leave him at home and have someone check on him, I would strongly recommend getting an xpen and not let him have free-range while you are gone.  It’s amazing what unforseen trouble they can get into.  Not to mention that when a stranger comes in, they may feel the need to mark the place up.  Also, when you are gone, they can also decide to claim the place and even if they are litterbox trained, your house will be up for marking.   It’s not pretty to come home to.
