Without going into detail… What do you guys think about having one free range rabbit and one caged rabbit? My boys have to be in my room (just because of living arrangements) and I’m worried that it won’t be “fair”… I know, I know, rabbits don’t understand fairness. But I’m kinda worried about Fievel’s teeny tiny heart breaking when he sees Velvateen doing binkies all night long.

Well, the majority of my rabbits are housed in pens and cages because I have so many. I have a rabbit room with all my former fosters who are seniors in their own area – not what I would ideally want for my rabbits but it’s necessary.

I usually have one free roaming rabbit which is Bobby right now and I put a baby gate in the doorway of the rabbit room to keep him out of there – mainly because he would irritate the other rabbits so if you can do this, that would be my suggestion. Also this would hopefully keep both from territorial poops as well.

Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do out of necessity.

I actually had the same problem. I had my male rabbit for 4 years and brought a female in to bond with him. they lived in the same room I would switch every other day who I fed first one day would be him the next day would be her. Actually my 4 year old male rabbit did not like it at all. He was use to getting fed everyday first then he would have to get fed second. My male rabbit is disabled now because of health issues. I had to seperate them about a year ago and the bond didn’t work out because of my males health issues. I don’t know if this happens with all buns. I found out my male bunny just likes to be alone and doesn’t like the company of other rabbits and prefers just me. I can’t say how your bun will react. Some bunnies become jealous! Hope it all works out!

If I had the space to completely block them off from one another, I would. My next apartment will probably be a 2 bedroom, since I’ll mostly likely be living with my boyfriend at that point. We’ve talked about using a baby gate to block off one room and have that be for Fievel. Then Velvateen can have the rest of the apartment. That would be ideal- I guess not as ideal as having two bonded rabbits, but apparently that’s just asking for too much.
But I have at least one more year in this apartment and both buns have to share one room. It’s really not any big deal, but Velvateen acts better as a free roaming bunny. You can just tell that he’s a bit happier. Of course, Fievel would be very happy as free roam as well, but I don’t totally trust him to be free roam at this point. I could also potentially make his pen a bit bigger… it’s 2 ft x 6 ft right now (they each have their own of the same size) and he could go to 4 ft x 6 ft.
BUT this raises another question- Fievel would still need plenty of out of cage time. Could I put Velvateen in Fievel’s cage while Fievel is out? They have been in each other cages before and they smell everything very intently, but show no real signs of being uncomfortable. They’ve flopped in each other’s cages before. Could this also help with bonding– sharing EVERYTHING, rather than having their own defined spaces?
I know this is probably entirely too much thought to put into this- I just HATE taking apart the xpens… They have screens (like screen doors) attached to the top via zip ties and it’s just such a pain to take it all off and re zip tie and whatnot. It might just be that the current living situation is best…

Also it will be good that you are giving Fievel quite a bit more space.

Now, will it be a problem for the rabbits….you just never know :~) so you will just have to see how they react.

Haha yeah. I guess the only way to tell is just to do it! This will probably be a weekend project.

*sigh*… this is kinda the conclusion I am coming to about Velvateen. He likes his momma only.
