Horse Seizure

Errrggg…Well this is a big thing in my life right now, so not to bring anyone down, but just to share.

There were 100+ starving horses seized earlier this month in a cruelty case. They are from excellent bloodlines, purebred Arabians; no one in the horse community knows what happened as the man who owned/bred them had a good reputation. Anyways, they are going through auction this thursday (I can’t believe they just put them through auction…) and the horse rescue I volunteer with is really out of space (the rescue has around thirty now, and just took eight from a seizure a few weeks ago).

So I’m frantically using my facebook, hotmail etc. to try to find foster homes for horses or even to try to stir up buyers for these guys as they come through auction. Basically these horse would normally have gone for five figure price tags, but due to the volume of horses and the condition they are in, alot may end up being bought for meat….Needless to say I’m stressed trying to drum up help and just needed to vent a little.

I read a bit about this case on zootoo.  After reading the story, I couldn’t help but think who needs 100 horses?  These are big, messy, expensive animals that eat a ton and require expensive specialzed health care.  How do you end up with 100 of them and then just stop taking care of them?  Did the owner get sick or something?  It just struck me as very strange for someone to have that big of an investment in animals and then just let them slowly wither away.

We’re not sure yet!! This case is strange in that they are expensive excellent horses and he was a reputable breeder…I am on the edge of my seat to hear what happened…

The seizure we just got some horses from, this old man had a tonne of horses just living off the land and freebreeding (he actually had a stallion in with the herd)…They are just mixed bred; Not given water or food or vet care or ferrier…This is more typical for seizures…I think people don’t understand that even though there are wild animals, domestic ones can’t just be free and do fine. The horses we got from that seizure are starting to put some weight on and we’ve even got halters on most of them. One baby (Moose-you can see on the site) got ill after he got to the rescue and spent about a week in vet care; He’s good now and just as tame as can be…Such a cutie pie!

oh that is strange.  and very very sad.  poor animals.  that owner must have developed some serious mental instabilities to let things get that bad and not protect the animals – even if  they were merely viewed as an investment.  good luck with your efforts k&k.

Well we just got awesome news, it looks like an arabian association may step in and try to rescue the whole herd…The site isn’t up yet, they are working on it, but if your interested it’s http://www.rescueonehundred.com

That’s terrible. I hate to hear about these things because the majority of horses at such auctions usually do end up going for meat. It makes me sick that Canada is one of the leading horse meat exporters and so many great horses end up meeting that fate.

That’s great that you volunteer at a horse rescue. Just like rabbit rescues, there are no horse rescues around here either. Only cat and greyhound rescues.

I’ll have to take some time later and check out those sites.

That’s great that the association is going to step in and help them. Poor things, they need a lot of love, medical attention and food now.
