        So you all have got me curious about horse hay.  lol  But I have no clue about it so what should I look for?   I found this add on craigslist.  Would this be ok for them?

        First and second cutting, good and dry square bales. $3.50 right out of the field onto your own trailer, $4.00 ea. delivered to your location, $4.50 per square if we help to unload. Horsemax blend from Earlybird Feed (33% rye, 19.84% Climax timothy,19% bromegrass, 18% Amba orchardgrass, 5.45% white clover). Call for availability on 1st cutting or pre-orders on 2nd.

        What is the difference between 1st and 2nd cut?

          Here’s an explanation from KMS Hayloft:

          http://www.kmshayloft.com/hay.html

          It sounds like a good deal IF:

          1.  Your rabbits will eat it;

          2. You have a place to store it.

            Agreed.  If possible, I’d suggest trying to find someone who will let you just take one flake of hay first, instead of buying the entire bale.  If you buy the whole bale and your buns don’t like it, it kinda sucks.

              There is no guarantee that mine will eat it.  So I guess I will stick with what works.  lol   Thanks for the info!

                I buy bales of hay and then also mini bales from BB so that my rabbits get a variety as a horse bales lasts for MONTHS.

                The hay you listed sounds good for bunnies- just make sure it is horse quality hay.  Horse hay is usually considered to be a higher quality than hay for cows.  IF you have a place to store it- it is worth a try.  And if you buy it and your bunnies are not crazy about it- you can always give it to someone that has horses or a local shelter that might welcome it for their small animals.  The most you have to lose if you do get a bale of high quality horse hay that is mostly grass- and you bunnies do not like it- is what $4????

                From what I read from the add- it all seems to be grass hay- until you get to the clover which is a little richer than grass I believe- but it is a very small amount of clover.

                The worst thing about buying a bale of hay- no matter how careful I am I ALWAYS get hay on the carpet in the trunk of my car.    And I have to vacuum my car before I can put anything else in the trunk like groceries since the hay will stick to the grocery bags.

                I did get one bale of hay that I was not crazy about- I just gave it away and bought another from a different source.  The hardest part about buying bale hay is finding someone that is willing to meet up with you to sell you just ONE bale of hay.  I usually offer a couple of extra bucks to keep my supplier happy- and it is still cheaper than buying petstore hay.
