Hi!

I have a 5 yr old Holland Lop bunny named Pepper. Every now and then, when she’s asleep, she’ll start making a wheezing sound. It kinda sounds she might have a sinus issue, and her eyes sometimes get watery.

At her last check up the vet said she looks healthy, and that her watery eyes may be because an allergic reaction to something. (I’m not sure what since I never have any chemicals around her &nbsp. So I’m considering trying this “HomeoPet Nose Relief” product. 

Has anyone here ever used it before on their rabbit?

Sorry you didn’t receive a reply sooner. I don’t know anything about that product but I think if she’s wheezing and has a consistent watery eye, I would def have a vet look further into it. Lops are prone to molar problems which can put pressure on the sinuses which could cause wheezing and watery eyes.

If her vet thinks it’s an allergy, it might be to her hay. If you’re currently using timothy you might want to check out orchard grass hay which tends to be less dusty!

What kind of litter do you use? Rabbits have extremely sensitive airways. They can get an irritation from things like cigarette smoke, incense, spices used while cooking etc. They can also get a reaction to wood shavings or pine pellets that people use in the litter box. If you and the vet can’t point out a cause, try to keep a diary.

I took her to the vet and she said my rabbit might have sleep apnea, or is just snoring or sleeping weird (which is so random and she’s never heard of sleep apnea in rabbits before but said it’s possible) because otherwise her teeth and nasal passages are healthy. :/

I use the “carefresh small pet” bedding & I don’t smoke. She still has a good amount of energy and is eating well. I may try a different bedding and hay to see if that helps. Right now she seems okay. She only wheezes when she’s asleep.

Hmm. I’ve never heard of sleep apnea in a rabbit either. Maybe try a pelleted litter. I like Yesterday’s News.

I am also suspect about sleep apnea…. I am more so thinking the rabbit may have an upper respiratory infection that is waking the rabbit up while he’s sleeping. When my Wick had his URI, he would wake himself up frequently due to his sneezing/clogged nasal passages.

Is the vet rabbit-experienced, and did she mention anything about potential respiratory infections? Eye discharge can be a common symptom, similar to how humans get more “eye gunk” when we have stuffed noses; except with rabbits, they need medication to get over it.

It could be an allergy, as suggested above as well, leading to clogged nasal passages, which cause wheezing.

… Rabbits can also snore, but since it seems like it’s waking up your rabbit, I’m leaning more towards nasal passage clogging, and specifically what could be causing it.
