Since we tricked him into going to the vet on Saturday, Magnus has refused to leave his cage.  This week we made an addition, adding what used to be Leia’s cage to his cage after changing the floor out so that he would have more space to run around. He left his cage for about a minute when we took his food outside the door, just long enough for us to attach the other cage to his, but he hasn’t come out since.

He hasn’t been antisocial: he will come right up to the cage and give us bunny kisses and let us pet his nose for as long as we want, and if we reach in and pet him he is totally fine with it. Yet for some reason, he will not step more than his front two feet out of the cage before he turns around and goes back in.  We’ve tried luring him out with his favorite treats, and even if he steps out for a second to grab them from us he’ll dart back in to eat them.   We’ll leave the door open for hours to see if he’ll be curious or adventurous enough to come out, but to no avail.

Because of this, he hasn’t been out to play for almost a week now! And he certainly won’t let us pick him up, nor would we want to against his will while he’s in his cage. What can we do?

SOunds to me like he really knows how to hold a grudge. I would just ignore him for a while then lay a treat pathway to where he usually hangs out and pout some lettuce or something there. He wont be able to resist (hopefully) and once he’s in his old haunts & knows your not going to take him to the vets, he might settle back in.

Nova does the same thing to me since I built her a bigger cage. I think in Nova’s case it’s because she finds her personal area to be the safest place, and I’ve read that her breed does like having 4 walls around them, it makes them feel secure. She only comes out a few feet, but she doesn’t even let me pet her unless I pet Hubble first, which makes her jealous. In your bun’s case it’s probably what Cassi&Charlie said, but I figured I throw in what my bun does.

Maybe Leia’s cage still smells like her and he finds that comforting?
