› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › home made insect pesticide for garden which are harmless to rabbits
My garden is full of insects like centipedes, roaches, mosquitoes etc. how i can get ride of it which will not harm my rabbits. i have watched in youtube about vinegar and baking soda mix spray, garlic oil, borax acid( if i spell it correct) are good way to get rid of insects. My question is are that safe for rabbit? if not than what should i use to kill those insects….
Will your bunny be in direct contact with it? Garlic can be toxic if bunnies eat it.
I’m not sure Boric Acid is safe.
I use vinegar to clean inside and I think baking soda is safe as long as its not directly ingested, but I’d be cautious of the garlic and boric acid.
I don’t know alternatives, but I’m sure someone here at BinkyBunny does.
Boric acid is definitely not safe. There are some plants you can grow which are said to deter mosquitoes, but most of them aren’t safe for rabbits to eat so if your rabbit has access to the garden I wouldn’t recommend those.
You could try a vinegar mix, I’m not sure it would work but it would be rinsed off when washing the greens before feeding. If your rabbit doesn’t have access to the garden, could you try using baits or something similar near those plants that are going to kill the bugs without having to put anything directly on the plant?
Am planning to keep them in the garden, so i guess they will be in contact with it.
if there any safe to remove all those insects?
i haven’t found anything which may repeal the insect without possible poisoning of rabbit.
if i can insects free mi loan than i cant adopt rabbits
i hope someone will soon post something to help me
and if u can figure out anything do let me know
Boric acid is somewhat safe. Again, not if bunny is able to ingest it though.
Diatomaceous earth is safe, non toxic BUT you want to avoid having is somewhere bunny could access it and sniff it. The fine powder can irritate their delicate lungs if inhaled.
Really there aren’t a lot of options for killing bugs where bunny could have access. You have to use something to kill them, which means that something can potentially harm other animals.
I guess the question should be what are you trying to accomplish here and why? Maybe we can come up with other solutions.
well as i have said, i want to make sure than my garden do not contain any harmful insects, since am planning to build a outdoor habitat for my future pet rabbits.
this is the only thing i want accomplish.
My house is too small for rabbits, and as i have a backyard, i want to use that to raise rabbits.
some suggest me to use vinegar water as insect repealer. do those work?
i will be really glad if anyone can come up with any solution by which insect will leave my yard and it can be safe for rabbit to play around ![]()
p.s. apology for my terrible english and grammar.
Mother-D, I don’t really think it’s possible except if you use mosquito-netting, perhaps impregnated with permethrin if you are in a tropical country. The buns mustn’t be in direct contact with the netting since they’d instantly chew holes in it. There are no chemical insect-repellants that are safe for bunnies to be in direct contact with. Vinegar water is most likely not effective. For bugs like aphids you can use soap-water with some alcohol and a few drops of mineral oil, but I doubt that’d have any effect at all on cockroaches or ticks etc.
What about treating your rabbits? Revolution and Advantage are safe. They repel fleas and ticks, but not mosquitoes. Are there any mosquito-borne diseases where you are (relevant to rabbits)? And, if so, are there vaccines available?
Note: Products containing Fipronil (e.g. Frontline, etc.) is toxic to rabbits and should not be used.
to Bam: yes i will put mosquito net around the cage.
i have been searching high and low on internet regarding this issue and some suggested me to use neem oil. event house rabbit society did wrote a short note about ‘rabbit safe garden bugs repealer’, there they did mention in a correct amount of neem oil is safe for rabbit but did not mention any detail about the amount of dose. on the other hand in one forum in reddit.com one individual mention using peppermint oil.
How safe are these?
i do not have much knowledge about this. I will be really glad if u can explain it to me in detail. ![]()
I’m not familiar with neem oil, it seems to be an Indian product. Concentrated oils can irritate the skin if you apply it directly on the rabbit. You could perhaps use it on the cage as a repellant. I don’t believe much in peppermint oil against insects, to be honest, but I might be wrong.
If you are in India, Revolution (selamectin) wouldn’t be an option for you, but you can get Ivermectin. Ivermectin is good against flies and certain species ticks and fleas + it is a dewormer that kills intestinal parasites. Carefully calculate the dosage though. You can give it by mouth or by injection.
Mosquito nets with permethrin repell bugs (ticks, fleas, mites, mosquitoes) as well as kill them on contact. They are much more effective than “plain” netting and are used in malaria-ridden areas especially for children. Studies have shown that much fewer children get infected with malaria if they sleep in permethrin-impregnated nets as compared to if children that sleep in un-treated netting. The permethrin binds to the net so it doesn’t come off if it rains. Even if the net rips, there’s still some protection.
Thanks bam ivermectin is available in my country. btw i live in bangladesh.
there will be mosquito net to cover their cage thou…
hope everything will go well
