My rabbit had one of her nails fall off today. There was little to no blood at the time the nail fell off but it did have a little bit of blood after she was cleaning it like crazy. She is definitely in a little bit of discomfort, she’s cleaning herself a lot, but she is still eating and acting like herself, by that I mean flopping almost upside down and spilling her water bowl all over her cage.

Due to the pandemic my vet is only taking emergencies. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make sure it doesn’t get infected? Also, does anyone have any explanations on what might have happened?

Sometimes, when a nail breaks off, it is just the “sheath” of nail that comes off leaving a little nub containing the quick behind. The nub is going to be sensitive. The good news is that the nail has a high likelihood of growing back eventually. I wouldn’t worry too much about infection since bleeding often flushes away bacteria. But you can certainly clean it with a rabbit-friendly antiseptic like diluted chlorhexidine solution.
