        Hi guys!

Since we adopted Tambor 2 1/2 years ago, he has been doing something a bit odd. Sometimes (maybe once a month or even less) his hind limbs will spasm incontrollably for a few seconds. This happens specially if he’s in a semi-laid possition and tries to move or if we are petting him on his back.

We thought it didn’t mean anything; that it was something similar to when a dog leg twitches if you’re petting him in a particular spot. A reflex twitch. But it doesn’t look right.

Has any of you heard or seen something like this before? Our trusted vet left the clinic and the new one (not an exotic vet) did a full exploration and manipulation of his hind limbs when we took him last month and said there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with his spine.

I would think it would be the same as humans sometimes get twitches randomly. Does he do them when he is dehydrated? There are some minerals like calcu that control muscle and nerve function and if he is low in it, it can cause spasms but I wouldn’t think it’s too much of a concern if he rarely does it

Not to be alarmist or anything, but it can also be a sign of either spinal issue or disease (such as EC) affecting his nervous system. Any chance you can videotape it at some point and take him in to the vet along with an accurate estimate of frequency and triggers? Just to be on the safe side and rule out anything that can develop into hind-leg paralysis later on.

Hi guys! Thank you for your responses. I’d love to capture the spasms in video, but as they happen so rarely (and when they do I’m freaking out), I have not yet been able to. I found a Youtube video with something similar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr_1N4CQeuQ. Tambor spasms are like that, only that they take all his backside, spine and forelimbs. It’s painful to watch (it doesn’t look cute, like in the video).

They only happen when Tambor is in postures where his spine is bended (when he cleans himself, for example, or is semi-laying and tries to get up) and have been happening regularly since we adopted him (2 1/2 years ago). They aren’t getting worse or becoming more frequent. Could this still be EC? Is it’s a spinal issue, what kind of tests does he need done?

Since it happens when the natural curvature of his spine develops a pressure point in certain positions, my reasoning tells me that it’s probably a spinal issue – like a major nerve being pinched, for instance. A vet visit and some X-rays would likely reveal any abnormalities (either congenital or due to injury).
