Hi, im ADEE.. we currently have one top ear dwarf mix bunny named Rain. Here are a few pictures.

Hes kept in our vanity/bathroom so there is lots of room to run and play. Het also has a carrier type enclosure that is used for a litter box, hes very playful and plays with us very similar to the way a dog would. He gets lots and lots of attention and seems to over all love life! Im looking forward to “meeting” and getting to know the members here!

of course the necklace (aka bracelet) was removed after the photos were taken

watch it about half way through to see him hand wrestling

and another video “come here bunny”

I actually never thought about it that way!!

We had actually named him Rain because of the paint horse “Rain” on the movie spirit… the horse had a “bald” (aka all white face) face and it seemed fitting as thats the movie i went to see the night I met my husband. Here in a few moments im going to upload a video of him playing at our home Hes a great little bunny and loves having his own BIG place to run around in.. .a very licky little boy too. He knows a few commands which isnt bad considering we got him recently from a breeder who didnt do much with the babies.

I have no idea if hes a rex or not, we were just told hes a dwarf mix… how would we know?

No, he hasnt gotten our remotes yet lol.. although he was chewing on my camera strap this afternoon when i was taking pictures of him. hes blocked off in his own part of the house so there is no danger to him, no danger to our things and we know hes safe when were not home. He has literally not spent one day locked up since we got him and never will. We have a carrier for in the event of a hurricane or transport but otherwise has free range of his part of the house. As time goes by we do plan to let him have access to more “Safe” places in the house and locking him in his “room” when were gone. Thanks so much for the warm welcome I know im going to love it here!!

wow, looks like lots of florida members here!! awesome

yes, lots of spunk lol.. we have debated back and forth giving rain a friend but were afraid his personality would change and he wouldnt want to play with us anymore.. is that a likely possibility or would he be even happier? We do plan on getting him (or the new one) altered so no babies result.

He’s absolutely precious!  Welcome here.  I have never heard of using a dog carrier as a litter box!  Is there hay in there too?

You should try and get both altered if possible. It’s healthier and it will also prevent some health problems. If you take time to bond with both bunnies before bonding them together they should both love you equally and the same. If you are not home a lot or can’t devote a lot of time to Rain, getting him a friend would be an awesome! He may even become more likely to play with you more because of competion for your attention!

Your bun seems very happy. You are obviously good bunny parents.  And he’s stylin’ with that necklace.

A friend would keep him company during anytime you’re not around and if you wait a little while until he’s fully bonded with you (as in giving you constant licks and wanting to cuddle with you) you won’t really have to worry about him ‘unbonding’ with you.  But you will want to get him altered when you can otherwise that cute lil’ bun will start being very unrulely when the hormones hit…

The carrier is the “litter box” we had a regular litter box and it just turned into an absolute mess, because we use AC all the time we havnt had a problem with the carrier getting hot or stinky or anything like that. We do put his hay and feed in there too.. according to the books and websites its best to litter train them that way.

I will consider getting him fixed, I need to contact my vet and see what they would charge for that. Rain is such a lovely little bunny.. licks my husband and i like crazy and craves our attention everytime we walk near the bathroom and dont stop to say hi. Toe licking at 5am while getting ready for work has certainly been a whole new experience lol. Thanks so much for the helpful information.. when do the hormones generally “hit”? Does it always effect their personalities (or is it bunnialities). Thanks so much again

                                    Adee,
                                    Really cute video.
I noticed you’re in South Florida too. I’m in Palm Beach County (Boynton Beach/Delray area). It’s interesting to find someone else making hurricane plans for their bunny.
I don’t have a bunny at the moment, but hope to get a new one next fall. (and sorry, I didn’t see in your post that Rain is a dwarf. Duh. Not a Rex.) It’s frustrating since there are so few shelters for bunnies where it would be nice to volunteer. The California members have many more – and someone volunteers as a Bunny Cuddler!!! I would love that.

There is the Wildlife Center in Ft. Lauderdale that has about 100 bunnies, and they won’t let any be adopted without being spayed/neutered first. Something to keep in mind if you go for a friend, since the surgery can get expensive for two. Is Rain old enough yet? I don’t dare visit there yet because it’s about an hour’s drive from my home and if I go – a bunny will certainly end up coming home with me. Not set up for it just yet.

Did you get Rain in South FL? I’d love to know where. So adorable!!!

Rain came from a breeder who works with a petstore I used to work at.. so naturally because i know him and his rabbits, naturally i went there to get a bunny. We really got lucky considering how good he is. From what I understand hes approx 4-5mos old.. I need to contact my vet and see what he can do in terms of neutering him and what the cost and ideal age would be. I would imagine hes old enough, you can see his size compared to the soda boxes. It is very neat to see someone else that is local!!! We are actually in West Plantation, very close to the Sawgrass Mills Mall if you are familiar with my area.

From what I understand, you have to jump through hoops to adopt from the wildlife care center..it isnt a “walk in and adopt” kinda place, their adoption fee is $50 which is a “deal” im sure compared to the cost of getting a bunny fixed yourself. I would really love to adopt a lop ear bunny for Rain.. I had a lop ear as a child and she was wonderful. I would dress her up  in clothes and bonnets, carry her like a baby and she didnt mine in the least. I remember the day she passed away like it was yesterday.. i was absolutly devastated. Now that Im older and have children of my own I wanted them to experience having a bunny, we wanted  a dog but because we live in a condominium it was unrealistic to have to go down four flights of stairs (or wait for the elevator) to take a dog to go peepee.

he’s gorgeous. very unique spots… i could just cuddle him! he’s not a rex, you’d know if he was by the very short, impossibly soft, fur. i would look into neutering him as soon as possible. he’s at the age where if not altered, he is going to start to become territorial, aggressive and destructive. think of it in terms of a child becoming a teenager. the behaviors change literally overmight it seems. keep us posted!

Not that im discounting your information Beka, im surprised you are so bent on getting all rabbits fixed that they will become (not may become, will become) distructive, aggressive and territorial. I have had bunnies as long as i have had horses, which is well over 20yrs. Sometimes we had pairs sometimes we had single bunnys and I can only recall one time (i know it was only once, and i can remember it like it was yesterday) ever being bitten and not one of our bunnies were altered, and we never had litters of baby bunnies either. We never had a problem with them being distructive, aggressive or territorial.. considering we had 10+ bunnies over the course of those 20 years we *may* have gotten lucky with our bunnies but i dont believe we could get lucky that many times. Im not discounting your opinion or even your experience but we never had a problem, if you told me i should get my bunny altered because it was healthier for *them* I would agree with you 100%, if you said get them altered because we already have pet over population i would agree with you 100%, but to get them fixed because they become little bunny devils, im not so quick to put them under for surgery. I  worked for a vets office for 7+yrs and didnt have an issue there either with people coming in to get their bunnies altered (and yes we did do exotics) I do remember people coming in for the routine check-ups, nail clipping, exc but never to get them “fixed”. Everyone is different, everyones experiences are different and what may work for you may not work for me and visa-versa

Thank you for the compliment on her coat (we did have her sexed because i wasnt 100% sure it was a boy).

BTW, my family is from OH.. Toledo and Swanton, where in OH are you?

Sorry I need to chime in here and say that it would be very irresponsible NOT to neuter your bunny due to the millions of unwanted bunnies crowding the shelters and being dumped on the streets.  So many people dump their rabbits because they are pregnant or they have just had a litter.  Save A Bunny recently took in 29 rabbits that a man dumped at a shelter because he couldn’t handle them all. Some were very injured and some had to be put down because of severe health issues. He started with 2 rabbits and ended up with 29.  This is too often the case. The overpopulation is the key here and I hope you get your bun fixed for these reasons.

I’m glad your considering neutering/spaying. It is extremely important in terms of their health and behavior and overall happiness (can you imagine being a sexually mature being with no one to procreate with? Extremely frustrating I would think). The stats on cancer are staggering 80-85% chance of dying of ovarian cancer by age 3, rather, a spayed rabbit can live 10-12 years. I’m sure if you look into it, you’ll make the right decision.

On a more serious note, I’m going to have to cite you. That video of your rabbit playing with a ball and hand wrestling was ILLEGALLY CUTE!!

Well Adee’s bun is a boy so the ovarian cancer thing doesn’t hold for that.

Adee – I’m sorry if we seem a little ‘snip happy’ here on the boards but we have seen many people who had not had their buns altered and wound up with surprises – either via unexpected births or destruction of property. In fact, I’d say about half of the people who become members here are due to their sudden increase in bunny population or the ‘terrible teens’ of the buns.

The information I can give you about having your boy neutered is that it does decrease the testosterone levels so that the bun will be less likely to be agressive and territorial. This also tends to make them more affectionate and less likely to sudden bursts of ‘hormonal rage’. In addition, if you wish to introduce him to another rabbit, the bonding process will go much easier if there aren’t hormones in the way.

If yer bun was a girl, I would all but insist upon spaying them to cut down on the cancer chances. But as a boy, there is no health reasons if he’s going to be a lone animal and you’re willing to deal with any issues that may arise from hormones later. I just personally feel that altering your pet makes them have a calmer and more stress-free life. I know I’d not have a single gray hair on my bald head if I hadn’t had to deal with my own testosterone issues!

Markus, i was confused by this too. she referred to the bunny as a boy in this thread, but she posted another thread in the lounge announcing her new bunny, who is a girl. when i mentioned the possibility of pregnancy she clarified that they are BOTH girls, so yes, the risk of cancer is a very real possibility.

I have contacted my regular vet regarding both the girls (yes, beka is right they are both girlys) she said for right now if we want to hold off then its fine to do so. Should they start exhibiting bad behavior we will get them snipped. Eventually we plan to have them both altered.

Thanks Kokanee… for the compliment on the video.. shes very playful! I couldnt get over how much she loved hand wrestling and playing around. She has gotten a bit more withdrawn since the new girl came in. She would rather play with her then us but im hoping with time she will enjoy us as much as she was before.Either way, they spend ALOT of time snuggling im glad they are both happy

                                                        Awww that’s wonderful!

I find that my bunnies enjoy each others company alot…So I often take each one seperate and spend some time: grooming, cuddling, clicker training or just playing. This helps my bond with them-since they are constantly working on their bond with each other
