I wrote on here the other day about my trouble with finding a bunny. I had pretty much given up… but then, a breeder I had contacted earlier emailed me and let me know she had some other bunnies that were now available. I didn’t have work or school that day, so I decided to go ahead and make the drive to see what she had. I immediately fell in love with a broken blue Holland Lop that she had and ended up bringing him home with me!

He is absolutely adorable! He is 14 weeks old, and as I said, a broken blue Holland Lop buck. I had put him in one of my dog’s old crate temporarily. However, I think now that is going to become his permanent home! It is pretty big. I don’t know the dimensions, but it is for a 60lb dog. I put a “hidey” box, litter box, food & water bowls, and some toilet paper rolls in it. I also lined it with newspaper; I initially thought this would be good for clean up, but I am actually thinking I will just remove that totally. Any other ideas of what I can add in there to make it more exciting and fun to him? I can tell he likes it and knows it is his home; he makes frequent visits back to it when hopping around the house.

He seems to be a very happy and inquisitive bunny. I am so glad that he is here!

        Now… pictures!!!

              Congratulations on your new bunny!
              has he got a name?

I know many people who use the dog crates, you can even attach a second level inside them to give more space. Man i sure wish our area had little to no bunnies for adoption instead of hundreds

Congratulations! It’s as Beka27 said, when you stop looking….the rabbit comes. I must say I am really pleased he is 14 weeks old as they often seem so young when being homed. Hopefully the breeder socialised the kits alot and got them accustomed to humans. Rabbits are social anyway, but early handling helps. He lovely – Enjoy!

Congrats! He’s cute! Same shade grey as my Leroy.

When I had just Leroy, I used a dog crate similar to the one you have and it worked out just fine. I did put a second level in a few inches up, to give Leroy some more floor space and because I know he likes being up high. So a second level might be something you want to try too.

                            He’s precious!!!

Definitely take the newspaper out. If you feel you need cover for your carpet inside the dog crate, you can try some large seagrass mattes for a smooth surface for him to lie on. What you need to be able to do is make sure he is litter trained, so check out the habitat section for some ideas on how other folks have made cleanable bottoms of their condos.

He will consider his cage a safe haven, and explore in ever-widening circles while returning to it. My bunny did that once when I brought his cage to work. It was cute to watch. Makes sense too.
Just don’t give him the run of the house at first. You actually do him a favor by getting him used to his cage and one room, or room and ajoining hallway or next room first. They litter train much better with limited space. Also, a litter pan in another room will reinforce use of the litter pan and give him an option so he won’t try to run back to the cage and not make it in time. *oops* That’s hard on a wee bunny who’s trying to be good.

                            More pix, please.

oh, he’s adorable! and looks quite happy too. I have a very shy bunny who goes through a routine everytime he leaves his condo. He ventures a few hops away and then races back to the safety of his hidey box in the condo. Everytime he goes a few hops further before running back so sometimes it takes him all night to make it out of the bunny room to other parts of the house. I don’t know if Daisy is paranoid or has OCD…lol but he just seems to be confirming that he has a ‘get away’ plan in place.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on him. I think he is quite a handsome boy, and I absolutely adore him already! 🙂 He is a little shy. Every time I first let him out of his cage, he goes off on his adventures alone. Then, he eventually comes over and sits with me and pushes his nose to me. So cute!

I had put the newspaper in to… well, I am not really sure why! Haha. I guess I was thinking of puppies. 😛 I will definitely get it out. Do you think I could put a little towel in there or something soft for him to lay on? Or is this a bad idea until he is litter trained? He actually has picked up on the litter training fairly well right now. I was surprised. He has some scattered poos, but for the most part, he goes in the box. I hope it stays that way! I also think I will add a second level. I have that hidey box in there, but he never goes in there. He just likes sitting on top of it! So, he’d like a new level.

As for neutering, he is 14 weeks old. When can this be done? I would think the sooner the better, but I don’t know what age is appropriate for a bunny.

Ah! So many questions already, and I thought I had already done a ton of research! I am sure you guys will help me out though! 🙂

I’d take him to a vet to establish a relationship with one you like while he’s healthy. You will want to get a baseline exam, and while there ask if the vet does neuters and when would be a good time to schedule. Ballpark age is at 5 months. Some vets earlier if they habitually do many rabbits.

A towel makes a nice blankie as long as he doesn’t try to eat it. Lambswool beds, like they make for cats, are cozy too. I got Sammy a Cuddle Cup, and she loves it so much she sits in it while eating. It’s very cute.

Pam gave some great advice. I also buy fleece from the fabric store by the yard. I usually cut one yard into 3 pieces and use them as cage blankets. Though don’t be surprised if he likes to lay on the bare floor – mine usually does. It took him a year to actually use the cat bed I bought him as a baby, so don’t be put out if he only uses a small portion of the stuff you buy for him 😛

He’s so adorable! You’ve gotten some good advice already. I do what Elrohwen does with the fleece. My bunnies like both the warmth of the rug AND cool bare areas (especially when it’s warm) So give your bunny the opportunity to choose both. Make a little soft bed but don’t cover the whole floor with it.

Regarding neutering – Many experienced rabbit vets will neuter as soon as the testicles drop (normally around 3 months). It’s a less invasive surgery than a spay, and most males recover quicker. Spays normally are done later and it take more healing time. (though you don’t have to worry about that most likely….we have had situations where the bunny had been missexed and so sometimes a he is really a she or vice versa)

Anyway, do have a rabbit-savvy vet yet?

Thanks for the suggestions for a bed for him! I definitely will give those a try.

I plan on using my current vet. I have used him for the past 10+ years. He is experienced with rabbits, and I am already comfortable with him. My friend who has rabbits has always used him and says he is awesome with them so I am hoping that I can just stick with him.
