I have a bunch of basil plants and the weather has turned cold so I’ve brought them inside. But I can’t keep them growing in

these indoor conditions so I was thinking I would dry the leafs.

It would be nice to still be able to feed them to Bunny but I don’t know if the basil looses too much value from being dried.

Does anyone else feed their buns dried herbs?

I have in the past and it’s a great treat for them. I’ve bought them dried though since I have no idea how to really do this. I think I got mine from Oxbow but they don’t carry this any longer. It had a variety (in a very small amount though) of herbs. I know sage was one of the herbs.

i grow herbs like mint/basil during the summer. i let them grow BIG and them i dry em in the fall, so buttons has herbs all winter. he loves dried herbs. i use the “microwave” drying method, because this is fastest. also be ready-the leaves are going to shrink-ALOT! so… make a ton

That would be a nice thing to mix in with his hay… of course you would still be feeding his regular fresh veggies as well.

Thanks everyone. I will definitly get to drying.

bunnycutie, I have not heard of the microwave method.
Do you cut off each leaf or do you dry a whole big stalk?

um you cut off each leaf. make sure they are all dry(so no mold grows) and place them on a paper towel. then cover them with another. im not sure how long to dry them for, but after a certain point, you have to flip them over and dry the other side. its much faster than the old fashioned hanging up-side method. i thnk for microwave method you loose a bit more flavor than air or oven dry, but its faster and the bunnies still love it. heres a link that mught be helpful

maybe you can actually have tipnut mailed to your email address with new stuff each day/everyother day. its got really amazing stuff my mint grew like a weed. i started with three stalks and after 4 months, i had a whole bush. i dried enough mint/basil leaves to fill a ziploc gallon sized bag 😮

HA! You should live in Florida if you want year round fresh herbs… you should see the cuttings I took today. I will never buy herbs again with the way they grow here.
