Help with Hay

I got my rabbit, Rosie, a few months ago, and started feeding her timothy hay. It didn’t take me long to realize I was severely allergic to it, as I’d sneeze like crazy, have watery eyes, a headache, and a runny nose for days after touching or inhaling the hay. I then read since she was only about a month old, I should feed her alfalfa, so I bought her that instead. I’m not allergic to that thankfully. But wanting to same some money, as hay isn’t cheap, I bought the compressed 50 pound bag. It turned out to be the a horrible quality. I’ll grab a handful and hay dust will go everywhere, you’d think I meant to buy dust. I honestly think it’s 50% dust. I try to shake it out the best I can with a strainer, but I can’t get all of it. I haven’t seen Rosie cough or have any respiratory issues so far, but it can’t be good for her lungs. Should I just deal with it until I run out and not buy it again, or should I throw the whole thing away? I’m probably going to start her on orchard grass, as I heard it was better for people with allergies. Does anyone know a good place/brand to get good quality hay that isn’t super expensive?

For your own sake, I’d give orchard grass a try. It’s not the dust hooms are allergic to, but the hay itself (dust doesn’t help, though). But don’t throw it out… see if you can donate it to a bunny shelter or a horse farm or anyone who could use it but is going through really hard times etc. You’ll get less allergies and good karma

Orchard, oat hay or any other hay that horses eat is good for rabbits. I’m allergic to Timothy myself, but I don’t react to orchard and oat. Alfalfa shouldn’t be given to adult buns but it’s fine for buns under 6 months of age. I’m sorry you got such poor quality. Could you make a complaint?

Thanks, I think I’ll use it until I either run out or she gets a little older. She’s 4 months old now, so I’ll get orchard grass when she’s 6.
