Help with cage setup!

Ok, so my kids are getting their own rooms now, and the older one will have the bunnies in her room. (it used to be a bunny room/play room) The problem is that the bunnies current cage setup is too big for the room as it is now. I have a factory made cage, 120cm x 60cm (I think), which is basically now their litter box area with hay, and then I have some hideyhouses and fleece on the floor. The pen is made from outdoor compost grids designed for fallen leaves, and they are 90x90cm a piece. They are flimsy, so building a second floor using those grids as support is not really a good option. But, I have to get their cage setup changed, it needs to take a lot smaller area of the floor. The bunnies are free in the room, and still will be, except for some nights maybe or other times when it’s good for their own protection. I can’t buy those nic grids. They are hard to find in Finland, plus very expensive (my hubby would go nuts if I spent again some more money on the bunnies cage, haha). So, here’s the room:

           

As you can see, there is only one corner. The desk is not as big as it looks on the picture, but almost. A bed would be 80x200cm. Both doors need to open, as one leads to a walk-in closet. We tried having the cage where the desk is now, but it took over the whole room in a way. At the moment the cage setup is in that one corner, taking about 1m x 2m 50cm.

So, any ideas please? I’m desperate, I only have two weeks left to figure it out and get the materials needed.

I’m a bit confused by the set up. If there’s a walk in closet why are there closets on the wall? Does the room have two closets? Maybe I’m looking at it wrong.

Yes, there are both closets and a walk-in closet. The closets in the room are also built in, so I can’t move them. As closets go here… well, we usually have lots of other stuff in the walk-in closets other than everyday clothes. (Like sheets, towels, out of season clothes and shoes, etc. This is also what we use the walk-in closet as well.)

Could either closet be utilized in any way for the bunnies?

My first thought would be to use the walk in or built in in some way while putting the bed in the free corner.

Thank you for the idea. As it is, I can’t empty the walk in or the other closets for this purpose. Otherwise the idea could have worked. If only I could build multiple levels

Hm… I think the minimum space for two bunnies is 4ft x 4ft which I believe is 1m 22cm x 1m 22cm (rounding up). So something like this:

Taking into account your panel size and maybe freeing up more space for the bed and closet, something like this:

I know it’s not ideal but it sounds like they’ll be getting a lot of out of pen time.

Wow, thank you guys so much! I hadn’t even thought about the possibility of putting the bed under the window like that… I only thought of the idea of moving the desk around. blaah, old brains, haha. But that looks like I could try it. The long option maybe, with the long side next to the wall, if the doors of the closets will open. Has anyone of you made a second level on top of a factory cage? That was something I thought of now… maybe if I could make the bottom from cardboard and cover it with something so the bunnies can’t chew it. Does that sound doable?

Side note, that pic of your bunnies in their habitat makes me smile whenever I look at it. I love flopped out bunnies

Thanks! Those type of pictures make me smile as well Sometimes if I feel down, I search youtube for bunny videos… my husband thinks I’m a bit crazy… I checked my pictures, and I don’t have a pic of the cage itself. But, it’s a normal factory cage, (with plastic bottom tray) which allows the whole front side to be opened, not just the small hatch. I was thinking of removing the whole front side of it. (now it’s just flipped up) I will post more later, when I have more time, now I have to go to work
