This is Bam, posting for Bunny Skyzzo

I added the warning for sensitive viewers.

Ei guys, had a little accident yesterday where my stupid black cat, claws out smacked my poor bunny on the face….

Luckly the third eyelid went in motion and stopped the blow, tho it’s sticking out of his eye!!!!

Went to the Vet and he said that i just have to put TOBRADEX cream on his eye for 5 days and it will eventually heal on his own….

Tho i’m sick worried… my bunny is kinda pissed off, you can tell he can’t close his eye very well with that piece of meat hanging around, so will it fall on it’s own or it needs surgery???

There are 2 options with an injury like this: Surgery to remove the torn piece or simply allow it to heal. If you simply allow it to heal, there will likely be some protrusion for the rest of his life. I can see why your vet prescribed the Tobradex. That ointment contains tobramycin (antibiotic) and dexamethasone (steroid), which will prevent infection and reduce swelling so it isn’t sticking out and getting re-injured (i.e. from scratching). Steroids should be used with extreme caution in rabbits, but sometimes they are needed for a short period for certain scenarios. With the eye, you have to make sure that the cornea doesn’t have any ulcers or anything though because the steroid can cause permanent damage if it does.

One problem I have personally had with ointments/creams and eyes is that it’s very difficult to actually get in in the eye. I have had WAY better luck with drops. Just something to consider.

UPDATE : Vet said that piece of meat is his lacrimal gland,so surgery is needed, they’ll have to put it back in….

And if they fail in that i’ll have to lubricate his eye for the rest of his life to prevent it from drying

Currently he’s under Tobarex Meloxidyl Soligental Baytril and artificial teardrops

If things go bad i’ll have to face a choice tho… I don’t think i can lubricate his eye forever,i’m currently under exams and dealin with my poor bunny and his medications all day ain’t easy, i can’t imagine doing this forever…

He’ll probably loose his eye if they don’t place that gland back…

Bun Jovi had this surgery before I got him, and my understanding from the vet was that it was pretty straightforward (you’ll often hear of this as “cherry eye”, which is relatively common). They basically use one suture to tack the gland back into place. He hasn’t had any complications afterward (it’s now been many years).

So the gland is actually protruding? It’s not just the third eyelid that’s damaged? Yikes! That is certainly more concerning. But as Dana said, the surgery to put it back is actually pretty simple. I would definitely go that route first because it would be your best chance. Worst case scenario, he eventually ends up losing that eye. For what it’s worth, that isn’t a horrible outcome. Lots of bunnies do just fine with one eye.

But there’s no reason to go there yet. There is a very good chance the gland can be successfully tacked back into place.
