I am attempting to switch Tater Tot from his young bun food to his big boy food. He is not happy to say the least. I’m only putting a teaspoon in with his current food right now he first flings his bowl across the cage (I have a smooth-sided ceramic bowl coming in the mail) and then picks all of his old food out and will just leave the new food on the floor. Can you grind up rabbit pellets and sprinkle it on the current food? Or would that pose a respiratory risk?

I just can’t figure out how to get him to eat them. I’ve actually never had a rabbit refuse to switch.

Could you maybe try another brand of adult pellets? No idea what kind you’re using but there are a few quality brands so maybe he would prefer another? Other than that I’m not sure since you’re mixing it in so he still gets the old ones! Maybe go with less new pellets and increase more slowly?

He’s only getting around 10 new pellets in the old food. I could give another brand a go.

The rabbit in the photo is Joey my bunny that passed on 4/20.

This is Tater he is a Netherland Dwarf (possibly a mix the shelter wasn’t sure). He got a big box of goodies from a friend.

He was a bit excited so he’s blurry.

I’m sorry you lost your other bunny 🙁 This one looks a lot like my Ben!

PS those ears! Is the rabbit in your picture the one who doesn’t like the new food?

I wonder if you could just eliminate the old food, and only offer a teeny tiny amount of the new food? Since Tater Tot is tiny, like a really tiny amount! Maybe a 1/2 teaspoon?

I’ve had times where I was unable to properly transition (with foster buns when they didn’t give me the old food), so I just started out with a tiny bit of the new food and fed less pellets than normal for about a week until I was sure he was handling it OK.

Thank you! I started this morning. He eats plenty of hay so I’m not super worried about him refusing the pellets. He did pick at a few of the new one’s when he didn’t have a choice but those left.
