Hey Guys! I bought a 40 ound bag of wood pellets yesterday and I came to change litter today and these pellets have a strong wood odor… It says these are safe for small animals… I am afraid to put it their cages…

        HELP!

My wood pellets definitely smell like wood…but I guess it hadn’t occurred to me that this would be bad. I knew pine smell is bad, but I guess I kinda expected the wood to smell like wood and it didn’t cause me alarm… My bunnies have been using them since December without troubles – but I’m curious to see what the others say!

Hi Donnie, the process by which the pellets are made renders them safe to use. Mine smell pretty piney as well. Are yours sticky with sap at all? If so avoid them, otherwise they are O.K. to use. You can always put them in an unused (new) garbage can like I do and leave the lid off for a while until the scent goes down.

Thanks guys… This really helped me… It was smelling quite piney and was freaking me out… As it has sat in their boxes the smell has mellowed out… It is actually quite clean smelling… August and Buster would not get in their boxes for a while… actually Buster still hasn’t! LOL It was freaking them out… I emptied their boxes but didn’t clean them so their scent would stay in there…

              Thanks again!

                  Beka- LOL.

I don’t think that all wood stove pellets are made of pine- I think some are made of hardwoods and some are made of softwoods- and I believe Pine is a softwood.  I am sure either is fine to use.  I don’t think it gets more detailed on the bag than hardwood or softwood as I am sure the exact content of each tree type might vary- as I believe most wood pellets are made from waste products from other manufacturing processes- furniture, etc.
