Help! Rabbit sick has infected pierced skin

 My rabbit has some skin problem  please help!!

 

Anyone know what is wrong?  what to do what this is called?

There could be a number of things that could cause lesion on the skin like that- the bunny definitely needs to see the vet as soon as they are open.  It could have been caused by a bite from another rabbit (do you have another rabbit?) any other type of puncture wound or even possibly an external parasite depending on your location/weather/etc (cuterebra).

It is impossible to tell the amount of damage from a photo- the wounds needs to be flushed and explored by a vet to determine the best course of treatment- sutures, sutures/drain or if risk of infection is too high- healing by second intention- leaving the wound open to granulate in and heal.  How much damage the underlying tissue has sustained will need to be evaluated.

The bunny will most likely be prescribed antibiotics and pain meds along with the medical treatment- so there is really nothing you can do at home other than encourage the bunny to eat and drink until you get the rabbit to the vet ASAP.

If this is an abscess it would have resulted from an injury that happened weeks ago- and has finally gotten to the point where it has ruptured thru the skin.  The initial injury could have been a single puncture- resulting in 2 draining wounds over the course of x amounts of weeks of festering under the skin- or the initial wound could have been 2 puncture wounds.  Puncture wounds have a high rate of abscessing because they trap bacteria in, while healing over at the surface of the skin.

Yikes, I think I would have fainted finding that. Please let us know how he’s doing.
(I have to ask, what part of the rabbit are we looking at? I think I see some ears, is it on his back?)

We call him speedy. The vet said they are either tumors or some wound that became infected and crusted over it was hard to tell for them. I have him on antibiotics and compress his spots with hot water twice a day

Compress with hot water? That sounds painful. Were you also given pain meds?

Actually compressing with hot water sounds soothing to me. When I was young I used to get some weird type abscess thing on my tailbone which hurt like the darn dickens and I had to take warm baths to help. So I guess this is the same idea.

Yes, what about any pain meds? Does he seem in pain?

Good thing you noticed this b4 it got any worse.   Things like that sometimes are really hard to see or find at first.

Jers-maybe it’s a language US/Aussie thing; A hot compress is usually just a warm wet towel applied to the area for a time No compressing really and more warm then hot

The heat would allow any puss and icky stuff to exit the wound and clean it out a bit, so its a good thing to do that Heat also relaxes usually, so its not that bad.
