One of our buns is acting out of character. He is not eating as well as usual; turning down favorite veggies. He is somewhat listless, but will respond to petting. Also his waste is smaller than normal and hard. Any advice on what to do tonight? I know I probably need to call the vet tomorrow, but I am worried about tonight. Thanks

oh dear!  i’m really not sure… hopefully some one more experienced will post soon.  the only thing i can think of is to check his tummy to see if it feels bloated, in which case you could try some simethicone to help.

i am glad that you’ve posted tonight, since not eating and smaller poops, are often signs of gi stasis.  It’s awfully late there now – but a good belly rub and some simethecone may help relieve the gas pressure.  Eating lots of hay often really can help too, if he’s willing to eat it.  Is he eating anything or just not veggies?

If he’s not eating in the morning -  get him into the vet asap.  Since stasis is so dangerous, it is best to get them on the course of meds and assist feeding asap.

also was he bonded with Honey?  If so, serious depression can lead to stasis episode.

I think this article is fantastic for helping people nurse a bunny through stasis.  It in no way negates the need to see the vet – but has some helpful tips to care for your bunny during a stasis episode.

please keep us updated on how he is doing. sending lots of good health thoughts his way.

Gravehearted – Thanks for that article.  I just printed it out and put it in Edson’s file just in case. Too many people have gone through this it’s good to be able to find info right away.
