Help, my rabbit is going berserk.

 I went to a humane society today, and I played with some of the rabbits there. When I came back, Bamber was acting crazy.

He just kept pooping on my floor, which he NEVER does, and he kept thumping. He’s not neutered yet, so I figured he was being territorial when he smelled the other rabbits scent on me, but what can I do to calm him down? He keeps biting on the side of his pen aggressively to be let out, but every time he wants to come out he poops everywhere!

I guess he’s trying to defend his territory, but it’s really alarming seeing Bamber do this, as even though he’s not yet neutered, he was pretty docile, and perfectly litter trained–until now.

Do I have to scrub down my entire room to get the scent out? I just cleaned my floors yesterday, so it will be annoying if I have to do it again so soon….

Also, I was kinda hoping I could volunteer at the shelter, but if he’s going to react like this every time, I don’t think I can :\

I was planning on neutering him anyways, but if I do, will it totally get rid of this territorial-ness?

Some buns are more territorial than others. The fact that he is unneutered is going to have a lot to do with that, but even after neuterting, they can be very trerritorial when confronted with new smells. What you can do to reduce the scent is have “shelter shoes” that you leave in your car in a bag and change your clothes/shower as soon as you get home.

OH my yes I can tell you stories of my Cotton’s territorialness, jealousy and  possessiveness.    Phew.  And he is neutered too. 

What I do if I handle someone else’s rabbit especially unaltered males if I change my clothes soon as I get home if I had short sleeves I wash my  hands and arms too real real good to get the scent off.

Switching shoes sounds like a good idea too.

Not all rabbits are that possessive  he doesnt’ act that way with Ruby’s scent on me either.  Well he does put smelly poop on me sometimes but that I can handle.   He is marking me he knows weeing on me is a big no no.

Neutering may help too.   Hopefully it isn’t you he is being possessive of just his floor areas.

Cotton is sooo absolutely bad when I smell like unneutered males he will litterally take a whif leap from my lap to my face and bite me good. He draws blood.  So I learned real quick get that smell off me or better yet just don’t pet the males.

My friend has a girl rabbit like that.  She is starting to settle down some. She had to change clothes and wash up too.   It is an uncommon situation but it does happen.

Some rabbits are more jealous than others by nature – the fact that he is un-neutered is probably contributing a lot to the jealousy. I also had a friend who had a very jealous bunny, she had to take a shower and change her clothes or else the bunny would take a big *chomp* on her arm! I think that changing your clothes will definitely help a lot, and of course, the neutering will help a lot too!

It’s a REALLY good idea to clean yourself and change your clothes when you’ve handled any other rabbits to protect your rabbit from disease/parasite transmission anyways. This will reduce the jealousy-but I’d definitely say that it was caused by the smell of other bunnies. I come home, strip into the laundry basket and get in the shower before touching my buns-just don’t want them getting sick from anything. Even if the other bunnies appear healthy they could be carrying something that could hurt your bun I call it decontaminating LOL
