Yikes mice.  Well you can buy a live trap and then take them to a field far from your home and release them.  They can be quite a health concern and it is very important not to have them in your house. There has been varying degrees of success with soaking a cotton ball with peppermint oil and placing them around as a mouse repellent.

My cat brought in a mouse several times when I lived home and we bought live traps (I absolutely forbid killing them). The one we bought was sort of like a little rectangle teeter totter bought at a hardware store. You put bait (cheese, crackers, etc) and he goes in and the end closes shut. There are breathing holes and you just release him in a field.

I would suggest you get several of these humane traps and place them where you hear them. I don’t know if mice can transmit diseases to bunnies but I would also suggest you dustbust the area where your rabbit runs thoroughly and frequently to avoid him coming into contact with the droppings.

            Good luck!

Yes, some humane live traps would be a good idea. You’ll probably have to put a few around, and you might not catch them all at once, but its a good idea to keep those traps around so you can transport the little mice outside You can usually get these traps at hardware stores, or home improvement type stores, maybe even places like Walmart or Target will have them.

To answer another question they can transmit disesase to other mammals like rabies. Their droppings can also harbor harmful bacteria and organisms as well so its best that the little cuties stay outside.

If I’ve ever seen a post that deserves my attention it’s this one… I work in the Pest Elimination R&D….. okay so some of it is not so humane…. I’ll skip to the good stuff though.

-You can get humane traps in any hardware store….
-Before you set them… take a look around where you’ve seen them, is there a hole in the wall? Is there a vent that leads from somewhere else? The tiniest hole can let them in the house.
-Remove any food that they can get to, they can climb… I”d even suggest relocating you bun for the time being if it is in the room where he stays.
-If you’re not quite sure where they’re getting in or where they are walking around, you can put some flour in a thin layer on the ground to see if they walk through it… you can see their cute little paw prints in the morning.
-Once you find their main runway… you can set the trap. Place it butted up against the wall or bookshelf etc. They feel most comfortable when their body is touching one surface.
-Use Peanut Butter in the trap. They become crazy…. it’s like a teenage boy and nudy mags. They start to salivate and are willing to sacrifice anything for it.
-Keep setting the traps and when you finally think you’ve caught them all… make sure to take them far far away. A local park or something.

-If you find a hole outside or inside of your house that you think could have been the entry point, seal it! Look around hoses and wires… they climb up these and wham… they’re stealing your Q-tips.

                  Hope that helps…

PS. I don’t kill anything with less than 6 legs at work… we even have two pet mice at work, chocolate and marshmallow… I”m not a monster

Thanks for all the info – I’ve never experienced much with mice so its good to know what to do! I actually had a mouse in my dorm at college and always frustrated my roommates because they would be shrieking and I would be saying “awwww what a cute mouse!”

lol… thats happened to me before too.  i’m the one saying ‘what a cutie’ while everyone else is taking cover.  although i did shriek & run away when a mouse lept at my head from inside a golf bag that was laying on it’s side on a shelf in my mom’s shed.  mom had a good laugh at me since i was the one always laughing at her for being scared of mice.

wouldnt want them in my house tho!  feral ones can carry lots of diseases.  great tips erbear!  my sis is just dealing with this same situation and was lucky enough to narrow down where they were coming in when she heard the pitter patter of their little foots in her ducts.  def make sure your ‘relocation program’ takes them far away or else they’ll be back in your house before you are!

Thanks Erbear for your insightful input! Do you know what can be stuffed in the holes that the mice won’t dig through? Would that expanding foam insulation work for places like around the pipes? Thanks!

i think expanding foam is good… except you may want to check if there is a certain kind that mice can’t / won’t eat through.  i know steel wool is great ’cause they will not chew through it but sometimes, depending on the space, you can’t use steel wool very well.

Thanks Babybunsmum for that info, I’ll have to keep that in mind. I am in big-time winter mode now and so the critters like to come in when it’s cold.
